I’m a little surprised Will Ferrell keeps trying sports movies. Talladega Nights aside, Ferrell’s previous attempts at comedy sports movies haven’t been all that successful. Both Kicking and Screaming and Blades of Glory were poorly received, yet Ferrell keeps trying. His next picture: Semi-Pro, a send-up of basketball based on the 1976 ABA basketball league, and the Flint Michigan Tropics, an underdog team that attempted to survive the ABA’s merge into the NBA.

A first look at Semi-Pro has arrived online and I’m afraid we’re being set up for disappointment again. Ferrell’s character, Jackie Moon, is another over-the-top characterization from Ferrell, something that hasn’t always worked for the actor. I’m not sure the supporting cast (including Woody Harrelson and Andre Benjamin) will be enough to entertain. Then again, this is just a first trailer, so it’s a little early to be making solid judgments.
