First Look At Frank Miller's 300 Sequel, Xerxes
It’s hard to say whether we’ll ever really see the long promised sequel to Zack Snyder’s 300. It always seemed like a strange idea anyway, doing a sequel to a movie about all of the story’s heroes being killed. You might as well make The Alamo: II. I probably shouldn’t have said that out loud, somewhere in LA, someone just scribbled that down.
So who knows if 300 II will ever get done, but if it does happen, it’ll be based on the new graphic novel being written by Frank Miller, the mind behind the original 300 comic. Miller’s been hard at work on the comic sequel to 300 for awhile now. It’s called Xerxes, and after three years of waiting Dark Horse has finally unveiled a first look at what Miller’s doing, in the form of Xerxes’ cover. Here it is:
The title of course suggests that this story will center around the Persian ruler Xerxes, cast as the chief bad guy in the original film. Here’s Xerxes as he appeared in Zack Snyder’s 300:
Talking to the LA Times Miller explains the new story this way:
The story will be the same heft as '300' but it cover a much, much greater span of time -- it's 10 years, not three days… This is a more complex story. The story is so much larger. The Spartans in '300' were being enclosed by the page as the world got smaller. This story has truly vast subjects. The Athenian naval fleet, for instance, is a massive artistic undertaking and it dwarfed by the Persian fleet, which is also shown in this story. The story has elements of espionage, too, and it's a sweeping tale with gods and warriors.
Sounds exciting right? Now stop, go back, and read it more slowly. What he’s talking about isn’t really a sequel to 300, it’s the exact opposite of 300. Everything that made 300 so great, so fantastic, so utterly gripping, is being thrown out the window in favor of massive scope and huge battles, all of which I’m sad to say, has been done to death both in comics and on film. If you loved 300… then I can’t think of any reason to be interested in this.
