First Look At John C. Reilly As A Vampire

By Katey Rich: 2008-07-03 17:27:06
First Look At John C. Reilly As A Vampire Ever since Big Fish, we haven’t had a good movie packed with magical realism and circus imagery—you know, the kind of movie everyone needs. Luckily, Cirque du Freak is coming along to save the day, being based on a series of children’s books about a traveling freak show and all. And this isn’t your average freak show either—it’s got werewolves and vampires along with your typical 1,000 pound man and bearded lady.

And who better to welcome the young hero, played by Chris Kelly, into the land of the freaks than John C. Reilly? He’s starring in the movie as the vampire Larten Crepsley, and Empire Online has the first image of Reilly in his full otherworldly getup. Of course, since the image is taken from far away, the two characters—the other is Kelly as 14-year-old Darren Shah—are mostly part of the scenery. But wow, what scenery!

You can see the image in its full size at Empire and get a look at what looks like it might be a really gorgeous movie. It comes out next February, and if it’s as promising as this photo looks, it might be a welcome relief among the crappy parodies and romantic comedies that usually populate that month. We owe you one, John C. Reilly!

dont like the idea of John C. Reilly playing mr crepsley as he dosent fit the part no offence but it a bit hard to think of him walking up a bitta string and over metal stakes and flitting hes a bit chubby no offence still but they could have casted somone more fitter and mr crepsly i thought had a crop of orange hair not a full head of curly hair

  1. baltorma Says:

i have to say john c. reilly is not fit t5o play larten. he fails at comedy so how on earth can he posibly play a dramatice role such as larten crepsley it was a grossly improper mastake to cast him as larten arguable one of the best side ceracters in a book please try to deside someone else for the role

  1. livvie Says:

Same here- Reilly doesn't really do it for me. I more imagined Crepsley as either a Harry Potter's Snape or as Sweeney Todd- Johnny Depp would have been an -amazing- Crepsley. I guess we'll have to see if his acting skills make up for his looks. What most people haven't said is about Darren. Chris isn't quite what I expected him to look like either, but everybody to their own opinion.

filmmakers do this all the time. Like on the film stormbreaker, if anyone has heard of it, the main charecter- Alex Rider- has blonde hair. But in the book he has black hair. Filmmakers hardly ever read the books right and make what they think are little mistakes except they aren't.

  1. Christina Says:

Like many fans of Cirque Du Freak, I honestly am not really warming up to the idea of John C. Reilly playing Mr. Crepsley. I picture this character being serious, Reilly is all but that. This actor plays more humorous roles, which yes I am a fan of. But who knows? This can end up being an identical situation to Anne Rice’s disappointment when she received the news that Tom Cruise was playing Lestat in the adaptation film for Interview with a Vampire. In the end, Rice more than fell in love with his acting once she saw the movie. I have faith in the director and Reilly; hopefully this film will satisfy us to the very least. We can not be sure of Reilly until we’ve seen his performance. It’s wrong to judge early.

  1. rach Says:

reilly is fat, has too much hair and is just plain gay.
could they have f***ked up the character anymore???? many very disapointing but i am still looking forward to the movie. Kelly looks pretty good but i really would love to see a better photo of the characters.

  1. puma Says:

oh my.. is that a vampire.. or a ginger werewolf?
is it me.. or does the movie kinda look a little childish from this shot?? kinda very.. un real.. sorta like the goosebumps kind..
i hope it'll be good though.. its a must watch.

  1. Kopa Says:

I really do not like the idea of Reilly as Mr. Crepsley either, he doesn't fit the role at all, nothing like I imagined Crepsley to be.

I'm honestly half dreading this film, I love the books so much, and already it seems that the film is going to go down hill.

I guess, if it does, everyone will forget about it and we can ignore the fact that it existed in the first place.

  1. nathalie Says:

is this movie also comming in the theater in belgium ??? please tell me !

  1. yanis Says:

I have to say, they should have picked someone else to play Mr. Crepsley. It doesn't even look right. I thought they would have picked Hugh Jackman, Alan Rickman or Johnny Deep or someone with an idea of what an action film is. He doesn't even look like Creepy Crepsley. Not even creepy, it's like he has a halloween costume on.

This guy, all I've seen him do is comedy, musicals and drama. I don't know if he's Cirque Du Freak material. I guess I have to wait and see if he doesn't mess it up.

  1. Firepope Says:

I am a big fan of reilly but i just dont see him as mr crepsley, and the kid playing darren is kind of a fag, and they also changed cormac limbs to a woman. seriously, who did this casting? and besides that, they made that japanese guy from last samurai mr. tall. WTF?

  1. Jimboa Says:

When I first heard John C. Reilly as him I was kinda confused because he had always done comedy. But then I thought why can he not do a serious part. Many actors can switch into many different roles. Actually he has played in "The Aviator", "Gangs of New York", "Magnolia", "Boogie Nights", and "Hoffa" all of which were very serious movies. So why can a comedic actor play a serious and scary role. He is now shooting a post apocalyptic movie now.

  1. StaceyLacey Says:

Like most of you i REALLY question the filmakers moves on John C. Reilly as larten.
but the again i have no idea of what hes capable of so im not sure.
Also i'm not really sure if he could force blood down someone elses throat i think, like others, not that he CAN'T play the role (i dont kniow that )
but that some one else would be MORE suited to the part.

  1. creps n darren Says:

i think johnny dep wuld mak an amazing crepsley with all of his expeirience n if u mix up willy wonka n cptn jck sparrow i think u get a sort of larten

  1. athena Says:

I tottally agree with everyones responsis and i do think we should give him a chance... I mean us fans will still have the book, it is gonna be different but i will try to enjoy it and so should everybody else.

  1. Mike Says:

I think from that screen shot thing the movie looks a little childish. I dont wnat a childish movie I WANT DARK GOTHIC SCARY PISS MY PANTS VAMPIRE ACTION!!!1

P.S In my security code it has 666 in the middle scary O_o

  1. hobbit644 Says:

ok they got the circus part right..and the freaky part right
but...does anyone seriously want him as Larten?
I always hate it when they do this with actors always putting them in comptletly different roles than what they are used to after years of doing something like comidy then somthing serious.

and they should have got the hair right at least!!
i mean even his face..he looks like hes about to start into a kind of freaky (but not in scary freaky just "thats just wrong" freaky) song and danc...

  1. Justice Says:

This movie will nto bring the books to justice. It will give the books a bad name which it shouldnt. Just dont even complete the movie. We do not want to shame the books.

  1. Rebecca Says:

WTF!!!! SOOO miffed tbh. joh c reilly yeah hes a great actor in COMEDY!!.
and i cant beleive that tbh nothing we say will make a difference as theyve already cast him.
alan rickman would make a brill Larten. cause hes so skinny and serious.
can you imagine reilly talking in that acurate robotic way of Mr Crepsley.
    I DONT THINK SO!!.
i hope he proves us all wrong, as is truly amazing at this part. but i wont be making any bets at this point.
and its true, filmmakers never read the books.
    x

  1. Karin Says:

    Well,
Personally like ,apparentally everbody else, I do not think John C. Reilly would make a good Larten Crepsley!!! Larten ,in my opinion would look just like how DARREN SHAN describes him in the BOOK!!!! John C. Reilly is not good for this character and needs to stick to his comedy! However sucky it is.
I also think it's insulting to Darren Shan that they have made so many changes to the already perfect characters of CIRQUE DU FREAK!!!
And did the Author even get a say so in the making of this flim???

    But anyways...
    That just my opinion!!!!!!!!!

  1. david zewsky Says:

    OMFGOAB!!!(oh my f***ing god on a bike)
what the fuck are they doing!
    mr crepsley is not fat
    he doesnt hav curly hair
and if he were an actor he wouldnt do comedy!!
im seriously pissed off at the filmakers, if they screw this movie up im gonna cut off their head , stuff them with garlic , set them on fire, drop them in the hall of death 15 times then throw their remains in the hall of flames!! after spending a day in sunlight of course!!

ive read the books at least 13 times over and tht is not what mr crepsley looks lik!
    kelly is ok :)
