With The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 arriving in theaters, we're getting a lot of peeks at some of the other upcoming young adult features in the works. That includes a new poster and trailer for Stephenie Meyer's The Host and Isaac Marion's Warm Bodies. And now comes a peek at the film for Cassandre Clare's Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
City of Bones is the first book in Clare's Mortal Instruments series and follows Clary Fray, a teenager living in Brooklyn who discovers she's a Shadowhunter, a demon killer. EW shared the first look photo below of star Lily Collins as Clary.
You may note that there's something on the palm of her hand. Clare points out that this is the first "rune" Clary has drawn on herself. In the story, demon hunters use these magical symbols to protect themselves.
“Clary has the ability to both create new symbols and make runes that are stronger than other people’s. In this scene, she is fending off an enemy with the first rune that she’s ever drawn on herself at the amazement of the other Shadowhunters," Clare said.
While Clary may be new to this demon hunting business, it seems she's no damsel in distress in this story. It's great to get a look at Collins in the lead role. I'm sure fans of the books are eager to see some of the other characters, including Lena Headey as Clary's mother Jocelyn Fray and Jamie Campbell Bower as one of Clary's fellow Shadowhunters Jace Wayland, Also among the cast are Jared Harris (playing Hodge), Kevin Zegers and Jemima West as Alec and Isabelle Lightwood, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Valentine Morgenstern.
Mortal Instruments: City of Bones arrives in theaters August 23. Those interested in more of the author's thoughts on the Mortal Instruments movie can check out EW's interview with Clare here.
