First Superman TV Spot

By Josh Tyler: 2006-05-13 00:00:00
First Superman TV Spot Remember all the positive advance buzz about X-Men 3 a few days ago? Well, it's evaporating. Maybe that means all the dogged negativity towards Superman Returns will swing around too. I don't know how it can't, the trailers look too good.

Speaking of trailers, here is another one. It's Superman's first TV spot, and while there's not a lot of new footage in here, what is there somehow looks more polished. More finished. There's a really beautiful shot of Supes flying in on a burning plan that'll just take your breath away.

For me, Superman Returns is still the movie to see this Summer. To watch all the trailers so far, visit our Superman video page.

I've SEEN the trailers..If you want to know what amazes me is how easily special effects can sway and influence. Bottom line is the costume design has been a MAJOR distraction for me in watching these clips. Special effect, computer effects, they've been around for some time now. The only computer effects of late that has impressed me were in King Kong. The Gorilla looked phenominal.

But Superman has to LOOK LIKE Superman. The special effects aren't enough to take away from the distraction that Routh in this particular costume doesn't look like Superman. The film clips look like a movie about a superhero that's BASED on Superman. For me that's not good enough. However, I understand the mindset of starved Superman fans willing to accept anything with Superman stamped on it, and the film will be loaded with enough FX to numb. One other point. Bryan Singer claims his costume design is based on the costume of the forties. That's a fabrication on his part. As early as 1942 Joe Shuster had the basic layout of the costume as we've known it for decades pretty much laid down..Only future tweaks to how the "S" was drawn in the chest shield remained to be refined. By 1942, the shield was of a fairly good size, much bigger than the one on Routh's costume. I have no idea what "forties" Singer is referring to.
Kirk Allyn (spelling?) and George Reeves' costumes were very similar, with Kirk's much more accurate in the way the cape attached to the shoulders..( More 1940's that evidently escaped Singer's research). The only other costume in recent memory that came off more as a parody like Singer's, is Dean Cain's suit. So cuss me and run me down, I want Superman to LOOK like Superman. Even in these whiz bang trailers, that just doesn't look like Superman to me.

So you're bashing people for being swayed by good special effects while you nitpick about costume design?

    Hello pot. Meet kettle.

  1. confused Says:

You're mad about how a cape attaches to the shoulders? Dude, if that's the biggest nitpick you have, you should be happy. But, given that that IS your nitpick, I don't think anything will make you happy short of Christopher Reeves coming back to be Superman. Oh, and Superman I and II? Not really that good. Since when can Superman teleport and shoot white light out of his hands? Oh that didn't bother you but the CAPE does? Be easy on the film man...

  1. Peter Chiapperino Says:

White beams from his hands and teleportation?! Those didnt bother all that much, I was more lost when he tore the "S" off his chest and it magically wrapped ol' Non, (Jack O'Halloran). Dude! What was up with that?! do you think that power is gonna get its own episode on Smallville?!
