First Trailer For Margaret, Starring Anna Paquin, Matt Damon, And Mark Ruffalo
Call me crazy, but when a trailer begins with Anna Paquin calling up Kieran Culkin and asking him if he "would like to go somewhere and take away [her] virginity," I expect the rest of the trailer to be filled with quirky, awkward sex jokes. I will then continue to expect comedy if the next scene has Paquin trying to get on a bus, but getting ignored by Mark Ruffalo, who, for some reason, is wearing a cowboy hat. Here's the twist, though: Margaret, the new film from director Kenneth Lonergan, is not a comedy.
Replete with an amazing cast that includes Matt Damon, Allison Janney, Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno, Olivia Thirlby, Matt Bush and Krysten Ritter, the film is about a young girl (Paquin) who witnesses a terrible bus accident that may or may not have been on purpose. Though she lies to protect the driver (Ruffalo), it comes back to plague her as the accident haunts her mind. Check out the trailer below or in HD over on Apple.
The bait-and-switch and the beginning of the trailer is a bit strange and while I suppose I can see why they did it, it's not effective. Really it just feels like shoddy editing instead of well-crafted. Why not just start the trailer with Paquin trying to get on the bus? The preview, as they all do these days, also shows off way too much. Don't show me Anna Paquin kissing Matt Damon in the trailer! Save it for the movie!
Released by Fox Searchlight, Margaret hits theaters on September 30th.
