I know it's dangerous to get sucked in by the advertising for any holiday movie. I know almost all of them turn out to be generic and saccharine. I remember being burned by The Family Stone and, God help me, Fred Claus. But something about the trailer for Nothing LIke the Holidays--a movie so typical even its title is a cliche-- sucked me in. Something tells me I will sneak into the theater come November, maybe dragging a sibling with me, and sit through it whether I like it or not.
Maybe it's Debra Messing, who hasn't had a decent comedic role since Will & Grace ended, looking fresh and appealing here. Maybe it's John Leguizamo, who's lately been specializing in playing creeps, cutting loose and being his funny and charming self. Maybe it's the central gimmick-- it's a holiday movie, but it's about Latinos!--- and I really am just a sucker. Either way, the trailer has me sucked in, and I need you to help me figure out if I really am just an idiot.
Check out the trailer below, and see if you're charmed by the large cast and hoary laughs about families doing the darndest things. And don't be ashamed if you are-- you're in good, if probably foolish, company.
