First Trailer For Sundance Prize Winner Beasts Of The Southern Wild

If you followed anything about the Sundance Film Festival this year, you surely heard about Beasts of the Southern Wild, the undisputed breakout hit of the festival. Even before it won the Grand Jury Prize in the narrative feature category-- pretty much the highest award they can give-- Beasts was the film that every single person couldn't stop talking about, the one that when someone asked what your favorite film of the festival was, almost everyone would cite first. Now the festival sensation is preparing for a theatrical release on June 27, and Fox Searchlight has released a trailer to give you a taste of what to expect. Watch it embedded below or in high-res at Apple:

That trailer contains everything I remember loving about Beasts at Sundance-- the sense of place, the slight magic about it, the stunning performance from first-time actor Quvenzhane Wallis--- as well as some things I'd forgotten, like the moving score co-composed by director Benh Zeitlin, or the hints of darkness around the edges of this modern fairy tale. Beasts is like no other movie I've ever seen at Sundance, and ought to be unique among the summer movie lineup as well, especially given that it's opening the same week as G.I. Joe, Magic Mike, and Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection. If you are intrigued by this trailer, please please see this movie, which if you're like me, will dazzle you and break your heart all at once.
