The Tree Of Life, the new film from Terrence Malick that's the most hotly anticipated movie of the summer for every film nerd, is slowly revealing itself after years and years in development as it gets closer to its May 27 release date. There was the dreamy and gorgeous trailer, the poster that showed off even more beautiful images from the film, and now the first official clip from the film, which premiered at Entertainment Weekly; it doesn't seem to be embeddable yet, so you'll have to watch it over there for now.

Taking place in both the 1950s and the present day, the film presents Brad Pitt as the harsh, possibly abusive father of three boys, one of whom grows up to be played by Sean Penn. In this clip dad's away, which allows mom (Jessica Chastain) to roughhouse with the boys as if she's Wendy running around with the Lost Boys. The constantly moving camera, pitch-perfect lightning and soft music make the whole thing feel nostalgic like a laundry detergent commercial, but there's so much skill and care put into every single shot that you know there's more to it than simple nostalgia for an earlier, simpler time. When you hear mom mention that dad's away, you know it's his absence that allows all this play to happen; the pink dress that mom is wearing seems impractical but also lovely in a way that makes you think she's dressing up as much for her boys as for herself. And look at the way the kid yells "Do not slam that screen door!" near the end-- it seems clear he's imitating his missing dad.

Feel free to over-analyze the clip even further in the comments as we all count down the days before the movie hits theaters May 27.
