If you ever read a book or two when you were a kid, or let Levar Burton read them to you, then there’s a good chance you had at least some interaction with
”Where the Wild Things Are”, Maurice Sendak’s classic, marvelous kids book. Spike Jonze is turning it into a movie, and will bring the story of a mischievous boy who creates his own universe in which he rules a world full of hairy, wild creatures.
A big part of what made the book so great were the illustrations, so I’ve been particularly interested to see what Jonze is going to make this thing look like in the context of a film. Today Warner Brothers released the first two official stills from the production and… they look exactly like pages out of the book. I’m not sure if that’s good or not, I mean the book is pretty weird and has no place in reality. Will that work in a movie? We’ll see. Check out the pics below, out of context they look weirdly good; like something out of The Neverending Story, which while kind of dated by today’s standards, still holds a furry, magical appeal.

This looks really cheesy from what is shown here. The entire idea of making a live-action version of this wonderful childhood memory just butchers all of its charming qualities. Spike is totally awesome, but I think this may not be his cup of tea.
Johnny, it is brutal indeed. I think he's shown us TOO much.
Sorry to be a Debbie Downer.
I jut read an interview w/ Dave Eggers in which he discusses his involvement on the screenplay w/ Jonze and Sendak. He also mentions that Sendak asked Eggers to write the novelization of Wild Things, to bring out the darker, more adult, side of the story Sendak always wanted to tell. Per Eggers, the film and novel will both be out this fall. Sorry, I can't recall where I came across the interview.
Why does making this live-action 'butcher' it? Have you not even seen Spike Jones' work? And I think that at first glance it does look like The Neverending Story, but that also brings out the kid in me as well. Spike hasn't done much that has hit the presses recently, but the guy is obviously gifted so I for one am willing to give him the benefit here.
first Id like to say that I have never posted anything...ever but while searching for this book online for a younger member of my fam.. cant help but think that as great as some movies were when I was younger. (aka/ never ending story, mary poppins, batteries not included... the list go's on and on for all of us)
I wish that some things where still 2 sacaerd for hollywood...such as jim carey doing the"grinch", or the new "horton hears a who."
at least when ben stiller is spoofing Startsky and Hutch... we know what we are in for.
I guess all I could ask is before you take the young ones to the movies make sure they hav made there mind up about the book first... then they can compare the their ideas w/ what the directors.
in closing directors and hollywood dont have a better interpertation of these storys as any of us did when we were five... there just better at putting it on film.
good luck spike cant wait to see your interpertation, just ask your mom to read you the book one more time before you say "thats a wrap."

Looks great, but if I remember, (and I may be wrong), was it ever daytime in the "other" world?
