I’m not sure which Hollywood modus operandi is worse: money grubbing studios betraying and exploiting great movies by filming sequels and remakes or the inevitable sprint to saturate a new genre market after a film’s breakout success. Either of these heinous cinematic crimes would be loathsome enough, but producers of 2005’s Fantastic Four may be able to accomplish both.
Ain’t It Cool News is reporting that the rough cut of the superhero sequel was met with horrid feedback. A few nights ago, Fox Studios screened an early version of Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer. Reportedly, the Hindenburg had more positive reviews than this debacle. At least, that firey nightmare had some survivors.
Possibly even more shocking is the report that Laurence Fishburne has joined the cast. Apparently, he will lend his voice to the Silver Surfer nemesis Galactus. Great. Let’s destroy some more great acting careers. What about John Cusack? Maybe we can find a bloated, overused superhero for him to play too.
I won’t be seeing this train wreck, but luckily, for Marvel Comics, there’s enough ignorant fanboys to turn a profit.
