Does everybody remember a couple of years ago when Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane was gearing up to produce a televised reboot of that most celebrated of pre-Simpsons animated sitcoms, The Flintstones? I’m pretty sure there were nationwide finger sprains from wary citizens trying to cross their fingers too fast, but it inevitably went to the wayside while MacFarlane worked on other projects.

That project now seems like a high-quality pipe dream, as Warner Bros. and WWE Studios will partner up to co-produce a direct-to-“anything but a theater” animation based on the prehistoric clan, according to Deadline. Because the WWE is involved, you can bet there are a few big wrestling names attached, even though there doesn’t appear to be a script, director or any other stars. It appears the crux of the film will take place around a primitive WWE main event involving the inadequately-named John Cenastone (John Cena) and CM Punkrock (CM Punk), as well as the much more cleverly titled Vince McMagma (Vince McMahon). Considering this is a non-theatrical release compiled with the success of Fast & Furious 6 and his last few movies, The Rock will probably be staying far away from this one, despite having a name custom-fit for this project. They would probably just call him “The Boulder” or some dumb shit like that anyway.

This will be the second project between WWE Studios and Hanna Barbera characters, as they have the direct-to-video “Untitled Scooby-Doo Wrestlemania Movie” tie-in coming next year. It seems silly that we’re still latching on to such tales set in such ancient times, whereas nobody can get a Jetsons project off the ground. This is the future, people. Hopefully they won’t get any UFC stars attached to that one.

This Flintstones movie will be released at some point, probably next year, on Blu-ray, DVD, VOD and digital download. The newest WWE video game, WWE 14, will be out this fall, just in case you didn’t want to wait to watch two of those fighters voice cartoon characters.
