It’s been thirteen years since Forrest Gump first ran into theaters, and now it looks like America’s favorite chocolate loving mental deficient may be back for a sequel. Forrest Gump II isn’t a new idea, Paramount has been kicking it around since the original movie made a bajillion dollars, and in 2001 they even hired Forrest Gump writer Eric Roth to pen a sequel screenplay.
An absolutely reliable, unfortunately anonymous source, contacted me tonight with the latest scoop on Forrest’s impending return. It seems that old 2001 Eric Roth screenplay is being dragged out of development hell for another look by Gump producers Steve Tisch and Wendy Finerman. Remember that the first Forrest Gump movie was based on a novel by Winston Groom. Roth’s sequel script was based on Groom’s followup novel, “Gump & Co”. “Gump & Co” takes place several years after “Forrest Gump” and finds Forrest’s shrimping business failed and Jenny dead, leaving Forrest a single unemployed father. As you’d expect, Gump still stumbles through more important historical events. In this case it’s a cavalcade of history from the 80s and 90s. He even meets Tom Hanks.
So, why didn’t Paramount make this five years ago when Roth first wrote the script? Apparently the project got bogged down in a big legal tiff between Groom, the book’s original author, and the studio. Groom claimed he wasn’t properly paid for Forrest Gump, and so refused to sell them the sequel rights to his other book. Evidently they’ve now worked it out.
The truly important question here is whether or not Tom Hanks will return. Our source says Finerman and Tisch are talking to him, but there’s nothing definitive yet. It is however likely that Gary Sinise will be back as Forrest’s battle damaged buddy Lt. Dan. If Tom can’t be talked into it, will they replace him? Word is they want this in theaters within the next couple of years, so while it’s possible, let’s hope they’re smart enough to scrap it if he’s not interested. No one does a better potty dance.
UPDATE! We've recently received an email from author Winston Groom, who asserts that the rumors of a feud between he and Paramount are completely false. He says, "There was never any "feud" between me and Paramount Pictures that caused any delay in making a movie of Gump & Company, a sequel to Forrest Gump. Hell, the studio bought the sequel a paid me a ton of dough even before it came out, and they then owned it, as they still do, and can make it a movie anytime they damn well please."

RUN Forrest RUN
while reading this post i think that there is no way in this world that they should make a forrest 2
even if the idea does sound promising, it will only lead to bitching and moaning about how the best of gump is missing, so RUN FORREST RUN
The first Forrest Gump movie was only very loosely based on the book. It's an homage more to Eric Roth's editing capabilities than to Winston Groom's writing style.
I've met Mr. Groom on more than one occasion (I grew up down the road from his house) and he was one of the most pompous self-centered asses I've ever met. This was BEFORE Forrest Gump (the movie) came out. I'd hate to see him now.
Tom hanks is forrest gump . forrest gump is tom hanks . just like you cannot replace indy you can't replace tom hanks . its like if you came home for christmas and someone re-casted your grandmother ..
I think it would be cool if we follow forrest to the current year the movie is released . But then again part of me thinks this would never capture the magic of the first film . Part of what made that movie so great were the periods it delt with . The 50's - late 70's And the music that travled with forrest as subtext to his story .
If zemeckis and speilberg are on board . with tom hanks and gary sinise and Haley Joel Osment as his son .. plus
a truely amazing soundtrack guides our path through history once more then i say it can be done . But only if they don't rush for a release and take there time making another classic movie ... if it can be done at all . remember zemeckis said no to back to the future 4 . and not every good movie needs a sequel , ie jurassic park the lost world , superman II , so on there are many examples .
I read Gump and Co. , let's just say I didn't like the premise. Lt. Dan screws over Forrest and he is broke. That right there ended it for me. I read the rest of the book but was very disappointed.
Um, Machette that is not my source. Aint It Cool News picked up the story from US, not vice-versa. You'll note that their coverage of this story links back to THIS page.
Uhh yeah, Groom got completely screwed over by Hollywood accounting practices, he got paid next to nothing for the movie. That's fairly common knowledge... He wasn't the first or last either.
As a person with the name 'Forrest' who happens to enjoy running, THIS MOVIE MUST NOT BE MADE. PLEASE. OH GOD NOT AGAIN. I have had that line quoted at me far too many times to count.
tom please i hope you see this.you are forest gump , my fav all time movie.please do the movie. and i hope they take time in the making cuz it is a classic.and it would be nice to see as many cast members as possible.lt dan and more.thanks venting here :)
I'd truly give it it's day in court if Tom Hanks came back, and they did a sweet job with the soundtrack. After all, music really defines a lot of what 'went on' during a generation, and having been a child of the 80's and a teen of the 90's it'd be fun to see what they drag out of the closet and throw up on screen :D
But I have to agree with justin: They really do need to take the time to make it a solid film. The first had it all... drama, fun, and plenty of great one-liners that people could throw around in conversation combined with music that, when heard later in life, brought those scenes back to your mind. I mean seriously, can anyone listen to Sweet Home Alabama without thinkin of Gump? I think if they take their time and put as much heart into the sequel as they did into the first, it's got a good chance at capturing yet another generation's interest.
Im not a HUGE gump fan but i did enjoy the movie...even after seeing it a million times.... i think i would enjoy a sequel even if its a straight to dvd crapshoot film i kind of like those so anyhow the first movie had a strong message and i think in this day and age with the war and so many crisis going on people need to hear a good message.
"Stupid is as stupid does"...and stupid would be to make a Forrest Gump sequel!
Let this movie stand alone with greatness - PLEASE do not attempt to make another Gump. Forrest Gump is my absolute favorite movie of all time & to try to repeat it is embarrassing even to think about...
To correct a post from above, Spielberg had nothing to do with Gump. If he got involved I guess that would be ok. I don't think a sequel is wise, FG is a masterpiece, a sequel probably wouldn't add anything to the character. What was great about the first film was that no one really expected the journey the film would take us on. I think I saw it four times in the theatre. Anyway, I think the audience would pretty much expect what is going to happen, or at least the pattern. Gump gets mixed up in a historical event and comments on it. Being limited to the 80's and 90' doesn't provide as rich a source to mine material from as the 50's, 60's, 70's and early 80's. Whats he going to do invent Member's Only jackets?
"place several years after “Forrest Gump” and finds Forrest’s shrimping business failed and Jenny dead, leaving Forrest a single unemployed father."
I thought Forrest was a kajillionaire after Lt. Dan put all of his shrimping money in that "fruit company" apple computer, he didn't have a job at the end of "Forrest Gump" anyway, and so now he's supposed to be poor even though he has all of those boarders in his house?
So we have to forget the end of the first one and Lt. Dan has to turn on the guy who saved his life and gave him his fortune?
I'd really love to see a new Forrest Gump movie. I first saw it on VHS in 5th grade. I'm now 23, and I'd love to see a sequel if its done right. All this nostalgia talk is making me want to go buy the dvd of the first movie. Thanks a lot, everybody!
Leave well enough alone. Forrest Gump is an exceptional movie and Tom Hanks an exceptional actor. The combination of the two was magic. It cannot be duplicated, DON"T even try. I see a failure in the makings.
I used to work on the lot where Forrest Gump 2 is being filmed. It's TRUE!!! I saw the shrimp boat set. The set was awesome!!! Wish I could have played on the boats!!
w00t! w00t! They better ONLY do it if Tom Hanks is in, I mean honestly, I still say that the main character in Saving Private Ryan is an army version of Forrest Gump and people know what I'm talking about!!!
This would be a cool idea :-) Forrest Gump is a much loved character that many of us would like to see back on the big screen. If Tom Hanks and the right people are involved in making this movie then it can be a huge success...... My fave line from the original movie? "I may not be a smart man ....but I do know what love is". Touching and true.Go Forrest!!!
You shouldn't mess with a good thing. they need to just leave that alone. i predict people will leave pissed. grr. its such a bad idea. such a bad idea... if dan is a jerk in the next movie, and if forrest ends up a stupid loser in the next movie, i know i'll think differently everytime i see the first movie. i can't handle that.
I can't imagine a Forrest Gump sequel being any good. The first movie was classic. it was different. We loved Forrest because he was a "stupid" man with a heart of gold who never let anyone stop him from achieving anything.
I doubt the same formula can be used again for a sequel without it being a flop. It would be tacky trying to create more adventures for Forrest. Sure, it might have worked in the books. But a movie needs to be fresh and new for an audience. And I dont think a sequel would achieve that.
i prefer not to have the sequel produced. i fear bad prospects. but if they really want to push through, i wish the second would not cloud the first in a humiliating manner.
I'm not too worried about the plot. I read Forrest Gump, and the film took significant liberties from the novel, so I assume that the sequel will do the same.
The one thing I'm afraid of is the idea of Tom Hanks not returning...
That would be like making an Austin Powers movie without Mike Myers...
Gump And Co. Is A Sequel Of The First Book Not The Movie So The Sequel Will Be For The First Movie And If Done Right With Original Cast Like Tom Hanks, Gary Sinise And Haley Joel Osment The Film Will Work.
Even if Gump and Co. is made perfectly; with Tom Hanks, Gary Sinise and Haley Joel Osment as well as a great soundtrack and awesome directors, the movie would ruin the whole theme of Forrest Gump. Forrest is a man who is honest, hard working and a little slow. The whole point of the movie is to show how an underdog can be a success in the world and how a "nobody" can influence everything around him in a positive way and still be successful.
Making Gump and Co. would destroy the classic that is the first movie and would destroy the beauty of the first movie. Keep in mind how sequels of classics (such as Matrix) can never measure up to the original and quickly take away from the prestige of the first movie.
Please Please Please make this movie! I am such a huge Forrest Gump fan! I saw it in the theater when I was a kid and have had many good talks with my parents about what it was like for them growing up in those times. The history and themes within the movie were so important! Desegregation, war, protests for peace, loss of loved ones, and just life! We must have this movie with Tom Hanks and the original writers. This movie could deal with so many more important historical people, movements, and changing times (Even continue some parts of history that have yet to be resolved). Give Forrest and his son the Apple Computer he invested in (maybe even meet Steve Jobs the founder of that fruit company) What would life be like for Forrest and his son growing up into a man and the lessons that Forrest could teach him, or maybe what his son can teach him (my parents are so bad with computers) Maybe his son then picks up in some places where Forrest left off or has been? Anyways a sequel only (please no more trilogys) movie done correctly with some of the original cast and writers could sum up the rest of Forrest and his son's life almost in the same way that Forrest and his mom began in the first movie.
forrest gump 2 whould be alsome!!! hugo said that godfather 2 sucked but what about terminator 2 it was wat better than the first one so forrest gump could be as good or better than the first one so why not it whould cool to see a newer fresh forest gump.
Dear Forrest Gump,
You better be nice and just tell your untendient to stop cussing and he better use apporicate language because Stacie Michelle McKenzie is very disappointed about the cussing. Stop the cussing right here right now
This is absolute blasphemy. The first movie they made is in my opinion the single greatest piece of cinema and this, I'm sure, would close to completely ruin the beauty of the feeling of closure we get from the ending of the first movie. I cannot believe they would besmirch the name of such a fine film by sequeling it and then on top of that even possibly without TOM HANKS?! Absurd! This is an outrage! Why are more people not calling for the head of whoever invented this terrible idea in their wormy brain?
this is my all time favorite movie. and it also had the best ending of the history of endings... let it me left at that. i'm not saying i'm against a sequel being made... but to be honest... i don't think it would be as good as the original.
i like this movie alot i watched with my girl ,with the fam and is a very cool movie but if anyone can tell me is this characther is based on real life or just maked up on the book?? pleaseeee some one answer meee!!!! thankss =)
Dudes, this is my favorite movie and I think another Gump is frickin' awesome, just as long as they don't screw it up. Rock on LT. Dan!!!!!!woooooooooooo!
Someone said that Godfather Pt 2 wasnt any good? That was almost as good as the first one! Maybe you meant the Godfather Part 3, cuz Part 2 was made only a couple years after the original I believe, as well, and wasnt as good, even though it was good, just not when you compare it to the first two.
I saw the movie, then read a book. It was the first time ever in my experience when the film was better than the book. The movie contained only maybe 20 % of the book, the rest was invented by the screenwriter or whoever. So I suppose if they make a sequel it should not be bad just because the second book is bad, because the movie would probably have little to do with the book. And that's good
I am torn on the thought of a squeal to the original. I love the first movie VERY much. Would a second part destroy the first movie for me? No not really. Spider Man 3 sucked as far as I am concerned but did it destroy the other two? No. I can still watch the first two and love them like the third one never came out. They are all separte movies with the same characters and base but differant plots is all. I didn't like the plot of one of them so be it. The other two are still good. So this one has a chance of being good if one sees it as it's on movie. On the other hand they did mess up the Spider Man thing and they have bombed a lot of squeals of movies that should have just stood alone aka the Matrix. It would be like trying to make a part two to Apollo 13. Greatness should be left alone and not tried to be reduplicated. So I am torn on the whole notion but I would go to see it...only if the original cast were to come back for it.
To build on a movie like the original Forrest Gump will be a daunting task, so it had better have the best in creative minds, scripts, material, cast, musical scores, etc. Forrest One came to life for a lot of us in a way few other movies could have . . . . If Forrest II can't be done well, Scrap it!
Forrest Gump is my favorite movie. However I don't know how good the sequel will be based on what I know of the second book. But if they can get Tom to sign on and do it again I want Shia Labeouf as little Forrest. It would be geat. Haley wouldn't work he looks nothing like Hanks.
How about a collaboration? Like Alien VS.Predator? Maybe have...say...Forrest Gump vs.Terminator 4...? The Terminator could be sent to stop Forrest from defining or playing a role in any historical event's thus rewriting history.....LT.Dan could be the anti-hero trying to protect Forrest from the Terminator!!.....After all....He did have Titanium Alloy leg's at the end of Forrest Gump.Isn't that what the Terminator was made out of?? A glimpse of thing's to come??? I think there's more here than meet's the eye...I smell a Block Buster...Run,Forrest,Run...Judgement day is near.
Those of you who are knocking sequels as less than the originals, should think about those that did work and became the sum of the whole part. Anyone remember "The Godfather" Oscars for I and II and that little film series about little people with big feet "The Lord of the Rings" anyone, anyone. Forrest Gump is the movie that deserves a continueing story. If any story deserves it, this would be the one. I'm in total agreement that it will only work with the originals returning. This would be a flop in any other circumstance. With much respect to 'Tom Hanks" who played "Buffy/Kip" in Bossom Buddies (LOL) I think he would only do this if the plot and script are as solid and groundbreaking as the first. Therefore, if Forrest returns as Forrest we will need to "RUN" to the cinemas to enjoy once more.
Id like to see Forest searching for his missing son who is now in Iraq, Lt Dan has sent his only son by his half asian wife to help find Gump jr. Both boys were inlisted men during the first Gulf war and had reinlisted to serve thier country together. Gump jr would be the first man inside the foxhole to bring out Sodamn Insane. Then he and garys boy get to meet the pres. In the meantime Forest who is searching for his missing son meat Dignitaries from all over the world. And in the end they all get to meet the president during his inaugeration..... Sounds like a plan for a good sequel
I think they should incorporate 911 into the Historical Events. However, that would mean that they would have to write it up to almost 2002. I think they would do a good job of this though, making it a very touching moement.
DO IT!! I LOVE FORREST GUMP/ TOM HANKS MORE THAN ANY OTHER PERSON IN THE WORLD....THEY SHOULD ONLY MAKE THE MOVIE IF TOM HANKS AGREES TO PLAY THE PART...I THINK THE MOVIE WILL BE AMAZING, AS LONG AS TOM HANKS IS IN IT...I THINK I WATCHED FORREST GUMP 14 TIMES IN THE PAST 9 DAYS....I LOVE THE MOVIE..."MAMA ALWAYS SAID, LIFE WAS LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GONNA GET." WHICH IS TRUE...YOU NEVER KNOW THE OUTCOME OF THE MOVIE IF YOU DONT MAKE IT....SO DO ITTTTTTTT!!!
Forrest Gump was an truly beauitful film which had a rounded ending to it. yes people im not afaird to amit it but i did cry when watching it and reading the book, at the ending of the film when Gumps son gets on the school bus and shorty cuts after that, its one of the fims which maks the Watcher imagine what happend, why spoil it, becuase todays moive makers use far to much special affects.......
I would see Forest Gump 2. I think they would make a lot of money off of it. If I told all my friends there would be a Forest Gump 2, they would all want to see it, either in theaters or video.
In Gump and Co, it is very sad to see that Forrest messes everything instead of being lucky like in the original. It leaves a bad taste. Forrest is truly stupid and Lt. Dan is a mean crook. A great job at deconstructing. If there is a Gump II movie, Tom Hanks must be Forrest and it *must* not be based on the Gump and Co novel. Only then it has a chance to work.
Its going to be hard to make a FG 2 because the first one was such a success, It would be hard to add up to the success and fame of FG. Because of all the great moments, qoutes and just the whole story.
However i would very much enjoy to see a sequal...but if Tom hanks is missing it would be complete crap! he is the heart of it. When someone says Tom hanks you reply or think with "ah yeah thats the guy who played Forrest gump". He's very well know for it. And if you think its going to be crap don't bother to watch it. Its quite simple...even though it could be hard to avoid it somehow.
Good luck with it! But we all know it will never be as great as the first but that doesn't mean they shouldn't attempt it. Unless Tom Hanks is missing of course...
Keep in mind...the original movie strayed FAR from the original book. So it would not be out of the realm of possibility to make a sequel that strays from the second book. But I do agree...Tom Hanks has gotta be in it. I mean, the sequel is already gonna be missing Sally Field, Mikelti Williamson, and Robin Wright. And as much as I love Gary Sinise he cannot carry a film on his back...he's a supporting actor. So ya gotta have Hanks.
Zemekis, Roth & Hanks made a silk purse from Winston Groom's sow's ear. It won't be duplicated, especially with the new sow's ear from Groom and without Hanks.
I was shocked when I heard that there could be a sequal!!! Forest Gump, is to me, the best movie of that decade. I honestly do not see how anyone could continue writing where the first one left off, and the sequal be just as good... I hope the sequal is just as good or at least extremely close. Because it would be a major disappointment and a sad let down if it was not... I am anxious and looking forward to seeing it...
Hey Producers, I agree with Everything Justin has to say below.
"If Zemeckis and Speilberg are on board with Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise and Haley Joel Osment as his son ."It can work.
I also think Jenny should come back from the Dead using Genetic engineering and that they should have a pet dinosaur named "Bubbah" and that Bubbah Should also come back from the dead and sue Forest and Lutenant Dan for steeling his shrimping boat idea,
Then I think Lutenant Dan should run Bubbah over with his wheel chair , killing him which I think should result in the
Genetic engineering reanimation of Bubbah once again, or actually a WHOLE ARMY OF BUBBAHS!!!!! And then They are sent to Iraq With a whole CGI army of Forests and Forest Juniors, but not to fight, to create Peace and play Ping Pong once again but this time, the Old Forest Gumps should play Ping Pong against The Forest Gump Juniors (Osment) and each game should somehow result in death and then even more reanimated tissue by Genetic engineering. Robin Wright has got to be back as Jenny, I love Jenny, and I think Robin Wright should be naked through out the entire movie and that Sean Penn should play an Army Lutenant named Lutenant Fran but he should get killed LEAVING NO DNA BEHIND after the first scene.
As for the soundtrack? The Feelies, all the way through!
Forrest Gump is my favorite movie of all time, nothing else even comes close. I would love to see gump on screen again.
Having said that, Gump & Co. was, in my opinion, the biggest piece of dogsh*t I have ever subjected my mind to. It was truly appalling and I implore all of you to go out and pick it up so you can see what an author who doesn't give a sweet baker's f*ck does to his characters. Buy second hand or off ebay or something so the genius who wrote it doesn't get paid. Burn it when you're finished, don't let your kids read it, it will melt their eyes.
I think, as much as I want to see a sequel, we are better off just leaving this one alone, and enjoying the original for the brilliant film that it is.

I heard (but do not know myself) that the follow-up novel by Groom was... not so good.
