There's been a ton of news about a new Alien movie lately, with confirmation that a new one is happening and, according to producer Tony Scott, it'll be a prequel. Slashfilm even had it on good authority that commercial director (and boyfriend of Ridley Scott's daughter) Carl Erik Rinsch would be handling the directing duties, with the brothers Scott merely overseeing as producers.

But apparently Entertainment Weekly (via The Playlist) has learned that Fox, unsurprisingly, would rather have the father of the franchise come back to revive it. They want Ridley Scott, not Rinsch, directing, and won't greenlight the project unless Ridley is at the helm. It's weird to see them getting all particular about it, since this is the studio that turned a franchise that started with Alien and Aliens into something that had to be associated with Alien vs. Predator. Have they finally realized that running roughshod over beloved franchises never actually pays off?
