Frank Miller Has The Spirit

By Josh Tyler: 2006-07-19 00:00:00
Frank Miller Has The Spirit Comic auteur Frank Miller is leaving the warm embrace of co-directing with Robert Rodriguez to strike out on his own. Variety says he’s signed up to solo direct his first movie, an adaptation of the comic The Spirit.

Miller and Rodriguez were responsible for tandem directing the brilliant Sin City, an adaptation of Miller’s own comic work. The duo are supposed to be working on a second Sin City film, but if Miller is signing up to direct something else on his own, you’ve got to wonder where that leaves it. Sin City 2 has already suffered several start date push-backs. Originally the sequel was supposed to be released this summer, and instead it hasn’t even been started.

At least Miller will be working on something. It’ll be interesting to see if Sin City’s success was a result of Rodriguez’s intimidating moviemaking know how or if Miller really does have a clue behind the cameras. It’ll also be interesting to see what happens when he adapts someone elses work. The Spirit was originally penned by Will Eisner in 1940, and is widely regarded as a comic classic. Miller will adapt the books into a script as well as directing it.

So for non-nerds, what the heck is it? The Spirit is the story of a masked detective who most believe to be dead. He lives in a mausoleum and fights crime in Central City using cunning and ingenuity to punish evildoers. The time period makes it seem a little like The Shadow, which was adapted into a movie starring Alec Baldwin years ago. The Shadow flopped, but deserves a more credit than it gets. 1940’s masked crime-fighting can be pretty cool when done right. If Miller’s very literal adaptation of his own work to the screen is any indication, don’t expect him to take a lot of liberties with the character or his adventures.
