What do you do after you write a movie for Clint Eastwood and Angelina Jolie? Well, there's only one thing to do, really-- go to outer space! J. Michael Straczynski, who wrote this weekend's Changeling, has signed on to write Warner Bros.' long-in-the-works remake of Forbidden Planet, the 1956 sci-fi movie that gave the world Robbie the Robot.
The Hollywood Reporter points out that Straczynski has some sci-fi cred, having created the TV shows Babylon 5 and Jeremiah. Now t hat he's spent some time landlocked, he might have an even better grasp on that fine line where sci-fi becomes accessible to audiences because it's about, uh, people. The story follows that classic sci-fi plot of explorers sent into space to rescue some stranded researchers, but with a cute robots added in there, I can see myself getting excited about it. In the muted, wary way you have to get excited about remakes, of course.
