GLAAD Honors Milk, Vicky Cristina![]()
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation really covers their bases when it comes to handing out their yearly awards. Yeah, they reward movies and TV shows, but also stretch out to comic books, newspaper columnists and print advertising.
But for our purposes, let's stick to the movies that GLAAD has recognized this year for their annual media awards, which recognize entertainment that helps in the fight against homophobia and defamation. Milk is in there, of course, along with Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which depicts a hilarious and dead-sexy three-way relationship between Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem. Popping unexpectedly for me was Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, in which Michael Cera's character is the only straight member of a "queercore" punk band. Rounding out the list are Brideshead Revisited and Rocknrolla, which I haven't seen and, I must admit, I wasn't even aware had gay characters. There's also a category for limited release films, which include foreign language arty film The Edge of Heaven, as well as Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom, which is based on the popular Logo cable TV show. You can see the full list of nominees at Variety. There will be three awards ceremonies held, on March 28 in New York, April 18 in Los Angeles and May 9 and San Francisco. |
