Gemma Arterton Joins Affleck And Timberlake For Runner Runner
With eye-catching appearances in Quantum of Solace, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Clash of the Titans, English beauty Gemma Arterton has become a sort of go-to girl when a macho movie needs some sultry eye candy. Notably, this sort of sexy sidelining is not really a reflection of Arterton's talent—critics generally cheered her starring role in Stephen Frear's plucky dramedy Tamara Drewe—but rather the tiresome trap that many young, lovely and vaguely exotic ingénues fall into. But hey, if stepping into this niche allows Arterton to share screen time with some of the world's most sought after leading men while snagging some sizeable paychecks, it's not all bad…even when the movies are.
Nonetheless, Arterton continues to be a hot property in Hollywood, and Variety reports she has signed on to her next arm-candy role, which will put her alongside Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake in the upcoming thriller Runner Runner. The film focuses on a Princeton student—played by Timberlake—whose online poker hobby loses him his tuition money, before ultimately landing him at the side of the shady website's proprietor, played by Affleck. How Arterton's character factors into the plot is unknown as her role is solely listed as "Timberlake's love interest;" however, if Runner Runner is a typical thriller, it's likely this love interest will have little more to do than be a possible victim of her beau's dangerous life choices. In other words: yawn.
Perhaps the long-delayed Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, in which she co-stars with Jeremy Renner as a bounty hunter-styled reinterpretation of the fairy tale kids, will prove a chance for Arterton to show what she can do in a meatier action role. But with a release date bumped to January, a traditional dumping ground on the release schedule, it looks like this action feature will not be her salvation from these thankless girlfriend/love interest/sex object roles.
Runner Runner will shoot late June in Puerto Rico.
