I know, you’re probably getting sick of Star Trek stories. But come on, it’s Star Trek! Somebody in the mainstream has to carry the flag. You’ll see Trek coverage on other mainstream movie sites, but most of the time they’re only doing it begrudgingly Most of our competitors have openly sneered at Trek and its fans in the past, and now they’re faking their way through caring about it just because one of their Hollywood friends from Hot Fuzz is in it.
Well that’s not us. I’ve always been a Trek fan, and always will be. I may not however be a fan of what JJ Abrams does to Star Trek. Depends on how it turns out. I'm open to being impressed. George Takei though, isn’t waiting for the finished product. He’s given Star Trek’s new Sulu a ringing endorsement.
In a statement released to StarTrek.com Takei told them what he thought of John Cho being cast as the Enterprise’s swashbuckling helmsman. He says, “Sulu's in good hands. John Cho is an exciting actor. I've seen Cho in many productions at East West Players and he always brings a vigorous sense of individuality to his roles. Under the leadership of J.J. Abrams, the Star Trek franchise is being infused with new energy and I hope John Cho plays a critical part for many years — and films — to come.” It’s a good day to be that guy from Harold & Kumar.
Now that I’ve had time to sleep on it, Cho as Sulu is starting to sound a little better to me as well. But Simon Pegg as Scotty… come on that just seems weirder by the minute.
