Germany Opens Arms To Valkyrie![]()
Two days ago we told you that Germany was banning Valkyrie, the next film from Bryan Singer, from filing in their country. The reason being given was an issue with leading man Tom Cruise, specifically his Scientology beliefs. This wasn’t the first time Germany was on record protesting Cruise’s outspokenness – they issued a boycott of the Mission Impossible films during their release. However, it appears German’s issue with what they perceive to be an exploitive business practice rather than a religion is not the reason behind banning Valkyrie.
In fact, according to the latest news coming from Germany, there is no ban against the movie whatsoever. Either someone in that country is being a revisionist or someone in this country jumped a little early, because the term “ban” was certainly what was being tossed around two days ago. Actually, it turns out the Defense Minister who announced that Scientology and Cruise would not be permitted overstepped his boundaries. He doesn’t have the authority to ban the project, nor does the Ministry of Defense. There is a separate company in charge of governmental buildings that heads that up. Apparently now Germany is welcoming Singer and company with open arms, with only one issue. The building where Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, the focus character of Valkyrie and the conspirator who attempted to assassinate Hitler, was killed is now a memorial. Within that same building is housed the German Ministry of Defense. The concern is that lighting, sound, cameras, etc, might interfere with daily government work. If an arrangement can be made that does not disrupt government business, filming there shouldn’t be an issue. So, negotiations are going on to film in Germany. This concludes the Emergency Tom Cruise Broadcast. Had this been an actual emergency, Tom Cruise would have been leaping from couch to couch, declaring contrary beliefs as Nazi science and voodoo. Hopefully, we won’t have to experience that anytime soon. |
