Horror films are a tricky breed. The current state of mainstream horror is a sad one, as it's riddled with remakes and PG-13 schlock aimed at getting scares from 14-year-olds trying to get their hand held for the first time. But even if you look too deep within the indie realm, you'll inevitably find enough low-budget trash to wall paper a double wide trailer.

Finding a happy medium is a tough task, but it would seem that Sundance darling Splice has done exactly that. Collider is reporting that after picking up the rights in January, Warner Bros. has finally chosen a release date for their small time horror film, and it's June 4th. This would put it in contention with the sure weekend winner Get Him to the Greek, as well as the next Ashton Kutcher crapfest Killers, Marmaduke (yes, it's really happening), and Neil Jordan's Ondine opening in limited release. With Nightmare on Elm Street crowds winding down after its April 30th release, the timing is just right for Splice to keep the ball rolling on summer horror.

The film stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley and has received nearly universally positive reviews. Keep an eye out the first week of June if you're looking to quench your thirst for smart, innovative horror.
