Gilliam Is Stealing John Malkovich![]()
Terry Gilliam may be only one movie away from living under a bridge in a refrigerator box, but he remains optimistic. In an interview with SMH.com he says that he’s out seeking financing for his next movie, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnasus.
Gilliam says The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnasus is about a traveling show which has an attraction that allows patrons to go inside a man’s mind. Personally, I liked this movie better the first time when it was called Being John Malkovich. At least Gilliam’s wife is on to him. He admits in his interview that his wife thinks he keeps making the same film. She’s half right. It’s not that he keeps making the same film, it’s that he keeps making the same unmitigated disasters. It’s a miracle if his movies even make it to theaters, let alone end up being good. I know Terry Gilliam is beloved, and he’s made some good movies in the past. But he’s nothing but trouble and you’d have to be crazy to finance him. Think about it. Depending on how you feel about Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (it gives me seizures… literally), the best thing he’s done since 1995’s Twelve Monkeys is Lost in La Mancha, a documentary about what a well-meaning failure he is as a director. Let’s face it folks. Terry Gilliam is better in theory than he is in practice. Until he makes something good again, maybe we should all stop fawning over him. Till then, my interest in his Being John Malkovich knockoff is zero. |
