Gilliam Refuses To Give Up Hope![]()
Look no one loves Terry Gilliam more then me. He was a Python for Christ sakes, he successfully translated Thompson to cinema, his films like 12 Monkeys, Brazil, The Fisher King, and The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen led directly to me being the film geek I am. Sometimes even I want to tell him to just give it up, though.
The past few years, well last decade, have been tough on Gilliam fans. First we had to deal with a seven year gap between films, then the first destruction of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, then the whole Brothers Grimm fiasco, which despite a few pure Gilliam moments (The Gingerbread Man, C’mon) was ultimately a disappointment, Then Tideland couldn’t pick up a distributor, and all but the most hardcore Gilliam fans (Which I’m a part of) seem to hate it. Gilliam hasn’t seemed to notice any of this and thus has serenely told IGN that his Don Quixote is back on schedule and Johnny Depp is still on board. "We're in the final stages of getting the rights to Quixote back. I mean, I've been hearing this for the past six months, and I'm getting a bit impatient. But when we get that back, that would be the thing I would just dive in [on]. First thing I would do is make one phone call: 'Johnny, when are you available?' And that would dictate when I do it." When asked if Depp was indeed involved Gilliam replied He's on, he's on. He's the man… I hope he's still my best friend!" Now if you read that carefully, you'll notice he’s not saying that he’s ready to shoot, or even that he’s got the funding down. Just that he nearly has the right to begin his fruitless search for studio support. That is what we call desperation folks. I take back what I said above, I love the fact that Gilliam can still dream like that. Dream on silly dreamers, we need people like Gilliam who can look at impossible odds and say, “Fuck it, I’m doing it anyway." |
