Golden Globe Nominees Announced, Basterds & Up In The Air Win Big image
The Golden Globe nominees were announced today, with Inglourious Basterds, Nine, Up in the Air and Avatar snagging many of the top nominations. Check out the full list of movie nominees below, but first, a little discussion:

A few fairly large surprises included in there, though several categories-- Best Supporting Actress, and all of the Best Drama nominees-- look like solid bets for the Oscar as well. Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon were all nominated from Invictus, but the picture failed to make it in Best Drama. Precious was nominated for Best Drama but Lee Daniels failed to get a nomination for Directing. The Hurt Locker cleaned up in Drama, Director and Screenplay, but Jeremy Renner was curiously, shockingly swapped with Tobey Maguire from Brothers, a performance that pretty much everyone had already managed to forget about.

Notable snubs: The Lovely Bones left out entirely except for Stanley Tucci, Bright Star is nowhere to be seen, and An Education only got a nod for Carey Mulligan. Also bizarre to see Michael Stuhlbarg nominated for Best Actor, Comedy/Musical but have A Serious Man left out otherwise.

There's a good number of double nominees, which often happens with the comedy/musical vs. drama split. Matt Damon was honored for both Invictus (Supporting Actor) and The Informant! (Best Actor, Comedy or Musical), with Sandra Bullock popping up in each lead actress category for both The Blind Side and The Proposal, and Meryl Streep competing against herself in Best Actress, Comedy or Musical, thanks to Julie & Julia and It's Complicated.

When looking at these nominees and trying to draw conclusions about the Academy Award nominees, it's important to remember just how many more names make it in here due to the category splits. Just because Julia Roberts popped up as an excellent surprise in Best Actress, Comedy or Musical for her deft work in Duplicity doesn't mean she's suddenly in the race. Same goes for Tobey Maguire-- that seems like a fluke more than anything-- and, yes, The Hangover's nomination.

But it is very curious that they didn't go for Invictus in the end, and to see Lee Daniels ignored while his movie is rewarded. The Supporting Actor nods for both Woody Harrelson and Christopher Plummer may mean solidifying support for the two performances that had previously been on the bubble, and the Original Score nominees are so, so perfect that I'm hoping they don't change a one (except maybe swapping out Hans Zimmer's Sherlock Holmes work for James Horner-- oh, in a perfect world!)

Below is the full list of nominees. Sound off on your thoughts, rants, or whatever in the comments.
