If you haven’t been paying close attention, you may not realize that Goldie Hawn hasn’t made a decent movie in more than 15 years. Seriously. Since 1990 she has appeared in 10 films and all of them have been either commercial or critical failures, or both. Think I’m overstating it? Here’s the list: The Banger Sisters, Town and Country, The Out-of-Towners, Everyone Says I Love You, The First Wives Club, Death Becomes Her, HouseSitter, CrissCross, Deceived, and Bird on a Wire. Only The First Wives Club was a hit but reviews were mixed at best. So, if you take her Oscar for Private Benjamin out of the equation, it’s not exactly an impressive career. Sort of like an earlier, white, female version of Cuba Gooding, Jr.
Hawn’s abysmal track record during the post-Reagan years has not stopped her from getting work. Variety says that she may star in The Rosenbergs Save Christmas , an alleged comedy at Fox Searchlight. The script was written by Elisa Bell and Jeff Klien, who have written together for television. Bell wrote the scripts for two bad movies that no one watched, Little Black Book and Sleepover.
The plot of The Rosenbergs Save Christmas involves two mothers (one presumably Jewish) whose children are engaged. The groom’s family hosts Christmas and the mother’s personality and religious differences send up sparks… of laughter! It doesn’t seem like these wacky family Christmas movies have done very well lately. That one with Ben Affleck and James Galdofini which made about $400 comes to mind. But with Goldie Hawn on board, this one is sure to sink from site soon after opening.
