Seth Gordon has turned two men’s battle to attain the top score on a decades old video game into a phenomenal documentary with this year’s The King of Kong. Now the director will move to a more straight forward movie with New Line’s Four Christmases according to today’s Variety.

The studio has announced Gordon will helm the holiday comedy, which is set to star Vince Vaughn and Reece Witherspoon. That’s a pretty sizable move for a director whose claim to fame is a movie starring, well, geeks. Enjoyable geeks, but geeks nonetheless.

The movie is being produced by Vaughn and Witherspoon, who will play a couple attempting to visit all four of their divorced parents on Christmas Day. I never would have considered what has become a fairly normal Christmas activity for a lot of people to be the inspiration for a zany comedy. Then again, I’m not a Hollywood writer, or in this case, the writing team Matt Allen and Caleb Wils

Four Christmases won’t be the only project Seth Gordon will take on at New Line. He’s also slated to direct an adaptation of his own documentary into a full fledged feature film. Who better to create a fictitious Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell than the man who captured them on film in the first place?
