It feels great when a film that would otherwise get lost in the shuffle gets recognized for true awesomeness. Tonight, the Gotham Awards recognized those types of films. The award ceremony, which takes place here in my new home of New York City, recognized several small flicks that were mostly overlooked by audiences. The most notable was The Hurt Locker, which received the awards for Best Feature and Best Ensemble Performance. The film about a soldier whose job it is to disarm bombs will likely be forgotten come Oscar time, but it's nice to know that someone is making sure to give it its due.
Other winners included Food Inc. and Robert Siegal's directorial debut (and screenplay follow-up to The Wrestler), Big Fan. The award list is short and sweet, something we could never say about the Oscars, so enjoy it while you can because come next February, we'll be back to ten nominees, overly glitzy ceremonies, and people shouldn't be winning awards winning awards.
