He gave a second string vampire killer three movies, helped breathe new life into the Bat, and now he’s taking on the Thunder God. David Goyer has proven his skill with super-heroes (Blade: Trinity aside) so he’s getting a shot with another one, as reported by Newsarama today.
The news comes from “Babylon 5” creator and current Spider-Man comic writer J. Michael Straczynski, who revealed Goyer’s involvement with the script for the upcoming Thor movie over the weekend. It’s nice seeing Straczynski’s name in a news story, I just wish the news was about him, instead of from him.
The Thor movie had been previously reported by yours truly here, as part of Marvel’s upcoming onslaught of comic book movies. In that April story, Poseidon’s Mark Protosevich was slated to write the script. Since it’s probable Protosevich has done some work on the script in the two months since that announcement, one has to wonder why Goyer is being attached to the project now. Is he revising a draft by Protosevich? Is he starting from scratch? Do people really want to see a Thor movie?
To me, Thor just becomes the latest comic hero to grab onto Goyer’s cape and hold on. The Blade scribe already has The Flash, Captain America, and a sequel to Batman Begins on his plate. Even if his previous track record holds (two good Blade films and the new Batman franchise vs. one lower quality film) there’s hope for Thor, assuming the project settles down with this writer and moves into the next phase.
