Guillermo Del Toro Sets Up Production Arm At Disney![]()
Guillermo del Toro, the busiest director in Hollywood, just can't keep from taking on new projects. At the D23 Expo in Los Angeles, del Toro and Disney announced that he's starting a new production label with the studio, Disney Double Dare You, where he will create new animated films "for moviegoers of all ages."
In the press release, del Toro said “As a director, I love to take audiences into fantastic new worlds and provide them with some anxious moments in the process. It is part of the Disney canon to create thrilling, unforgettable moments and villains in all their classic films. It is my privilege for DDY to continue in this tradition." He also noted in the press release "The emphasis is on fun," which suggests these films will be more Are You Afraid Of The Dark? level scares, rather than the genuine terror of something like Pan's Labyrinth. The first film from the label will be Trollhunters, described as an original story developed by del Toro. He'll be the producer of all the films, though how important that role will be in the actual day-to-day production is anyone's guess. It's frustrating to know that this development means we're that much further from the 10 other projects del Toro wants to do after The Hobbit, but on the other hand, kids these days really could use some good scary stories. It's another sign of Disney trying to branch out into less princess-friendly markets, and for that willingness to be creative alone, they deserve some credit. |
