Guillermo Del Toro Wants Harry Potter's Wand![]()
Unlike well, just about everyone else on the planet, I’m pretty disinterested in the Harry Potter movies at this point. There’s been one good movie in the entire series, the third one, and once it was over the franchise did an about face and went right back to being blithely and intentionally mediocre. I’ve already forgotten that the last Harry Potter movie existed. Here however is a notion that might get even me interested in paying attention Harry Potter again: directed by Guillermo del Toro.
He’s talked about wanting to do it before, but now he’s at it again. Speaking to MTV he says, “I’m definitely interested… now that the movies have grown darker. They have a contrast between the gloomy existence of the kid and the world he’s exposed to. They have evolved into a really nice universe.” Getting Del Toro to direct Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows would definitely be a way to go out with a bang. Maybe they’d even get back some of the warm, mainstream critical reception the third movie got. After all, Azkaban was directed by one of Del Toro’s friends and countryman, Alfonso Cuaron. You’d think Warner Brothers would be all over this, working the phones begging him to get involved. Instead, Guillermo is forced to resort to public campaigning for the job. Guillermo isn’t just a brilliant, beautifully bearded director, he’s a fan of the final book as well. He says, “I read it and I was very moved by the ending. It ends very much like a Dickens novel.” So Warners, the ball is in your court. Do you want more lukewarm, forgettable Harry Potter for your final installment, or do you want to contend for Oscars? Sadly, mediocre is probably more profitable in the mainstream, which may explain why Del Toro’s phone isn’t ringing. |
