Dear Hollywood: I thought we’d all agreed we were over Guy Ritchie. Hadn’t we? It seems someone didn’t get the message, because Guy is making another movie.
The Hollywood Reporter says Guy has been hired to write and direct the gangster odyssey Static. This is where I’d complain about how tired I am of seeing Guy Ritchie make gangster movie after gangster movie… if I hadn’t seen what happened when he tried something different. Swept Away was quite enough thank you. Sticking to what you know is a good idea Guy. The film centers on a wrongly imprisoned gangster who must make his way through town past crooked cops and bloodthirsty gangs with the help of friends in order to testify against dirty cops. If that plot sounds familiar, it is. That’s the plot of 16 Blocks starring Bruce Willis. I’m sure Ritchie’s unique perspective (excessive cursing) will bring fresh life to the suddenly overused concept. Guy Ritchie won critical acclaim as the director of Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels, and in the process spawned a whole slew of imitators. Since then, he hasn’t done anything noteworthy… unless you count marrying Madonna. Snatch was alright, Swept Away was a disaster, and did anyone even see Revolver? I guess not. It looks like more of the same from Guy Ritchie.
