Hangover and Up Taking Pelham![]()
It's beginning to look a lot like last weekend at the box office. The Hangover is off to an early lead with Up in a near second. If this trend continues Up will see a Saturday boost and overtake to be the real top dog. But where is the new blood?
Tony Scott's remake of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 may have enjoyed such star actors as Denzel Washington and John Travolta, but it isn't enjoying any love from audiences. Ticket payers have only handed over $8.3 million to the action/drama flick, enough for only third place on Friday and likely little more than $20 million for the weekend. That's par for the course for Scott who only occasionally tops $20 million and has yet to see a movie open bigger than $26 million. As Up launches a strong third weekend it's at a higher gross total than Star Trek was on after the same number of days in theatre. Pixar hasn't had a movie be the biggest box office release of the year since Toy Story in 1995. There are still a few more summer contenders to be dealt with, but Up seems ready to give everyone else a run, or at least a float, for their money. |
