As expected, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix had a huge opening day. Building on the $12 million it made in midnight screenings early Wednesday morning, the boy who lived made another $32 million throughout the course of the day to wind up with a massive $44 million in total ticket sales on opening day.
That total is enough to set a new domestic record for Wednesday openings. That’s right, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has the biggest Wednesday opening box office take ever, beating previous champ Spider-Man 2 by $4 million. Harry however, was not able to touch the more impressive record of simply biggest opening day ever. That’s held by Spider-Man 3 with $59 million. Order of the Phoenix ranks fifth on the biggest opening day overall list.
Warner Brothers, as you can imagine, is ecstatic and has been busy spamming the inboxes of nerds like me with the news. It’ll be interesting to see how this affects the movie’s take as it rolls into the weekend. Wednesday openings usually cut into weekend takes, so don’t expect Phoenix to break any opening weekend records.
