Scream 4 wasn't really the huge hit that the Weinstein Company and fans of the franchise were hoping for-- despite some pretty positive reviews it opened to just $18 million, and so far has grossed $87 million worldwide, barely half of Scream 3's $161 million internationally. Add to the fact that Wes Craven was pretty vocal about how uninterested he actually was in the making the movie, and it seemed the Weinstein Company would be pretty happy to take the money they made off the profitable film and call it a day.

But no! Harvey Weinstein, speaking with MTV at Cannes, said the movie will likely break $110 million worldwide, and he's so confident there will be another one he's already counting on Craven's participation too:

"I'm sure [director Wes Craven is] going to do a sequel, I'm sure he's going to do a sequel. Foreign [sales] are so strong that we'll do over $100 million worldwide. It's at $90 now, with about five or six major countries to go and a lot of small ones. We'll probably do $110 million. I wish it would have been better domestically. But it's not the worst thing in the world that's ever happened."

Weinstein also re-emphasized what Craven told us about potential plans for Scream 5 and Scream 6, namely that screenwriter Kevin Williamson had an idea for a trilogy from the very beginning, and that the main idea behind making Scream 4 was in fact to kick off a new franchise. So thanks to being run by a group of people who don't know the meaning of the phrase "leave well enough alone," the Scream juggernaut will keep trucking along whether you want it or not. And much as I really did enjoy Scream 4, this really doesn't some necessary. Any die hard Scream fans out there who want to take the Weinstein Company's side here?
