Hollywood shortlists are a bit tricky to navigate. Studios do what they can to keep the goings-on behind their biggest productions very hush-hush – at least until the ink on the contracts has dried - but every so often a list emerges of actors and filmmakers that are being considered to play important franchise roles. Sometimes the information can be questionable, but at other times it can be an amazing way to look into the way an upcoming film is being made. This is as true for superhero movies as it is for any other genre, and this past week we saw the release of two very interesting shortlists.

The first to arrive on the radar was an update in Marvel Studios’ on-going search to find a filmmaker to take the helm of their upcoming Doctor Strange movie. While a few names have been cut out of contention since the hunt began, apparently the three main contenders at this point are Mark Andrews (co-director of Brave), Scott Derrickson (Sinister) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies). All three names come from very different backgrounds and each could provide the comic book movie with a unique vision.

Equally interesting, however, is the casting search to find an actor to play Dr. Doom in Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot that is scheduled to start filming in the next few months. With Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell attached to play the titular team, we already knew that the project was skewing younger with its casting, and the same appears to be true for the Dr. Doom hunt. Sam Riley (Control), Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables), Toby Kebbell (Rocknrolla) and Domhnall Gleeson (About Time) are reportedly the top four (how fitting!) candidates for the important comic book villain role.

This week I’m sitting down with Roth Cornet, Entertainment Editor from IGN, to break down both of the races, analyze the candidates, and even pick our favorites. Who did we choose? Watch Hero Blend #8 to find out!
