Holiday Weekend Box Office: Guardians Holds Strong On Slow Labor Day Weekend
Labor Day Weekend didn't bring anything new and exciting for audiences to enjoy, and in return people pretty much stayed away from the movies, making the weekend the second lowest of the year so far according to Box Office Mojo.
Guardians of the Galaxy held fast to the number one spot, managing in its regular three day weekend to make $17 million, the same that it earned last weekend. Add in the $5 million it's estimated to earn on Labor Day and it added $22 million to its $280 million domestic total.
Not only does that put it on a solid track to easily break the $300 million mark, it has handily passed Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $260 million total to become the top grossing movie of the year. That's no small feat for a non-sequal comic movie, but it will likely end up at number two overall for the year once the painfully untouchable Hunger Games franchise rolls out the third movie in the four part film series later this year.
The two newcomers this weekend flopped miserably. Thriller As Above/So Below and Pierce Brosnan's latest offering The November Man took fifth and sixth place respectively for the four day holiday weekend, with just $10 million each.
