Holiday Weekend Box Office: Hornet Leads Sleepy MLK Jr. Weekend Sales
The Green Hornet topped what ended up being one of the sleepier Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekends at the box office. According to Box Office Mojo sales were down about a quarter from last year's four day weekend.
The number one $40 million four day opening for Green Hornet is just barely on par with last year's number two The Book of Eli and well short of last year's top dog Avatar which was earning $54 million over it's fifth weekend out.
The Dilemma only added $3 million to its regular weekend sales bringing it to $21 million.
So where were audiences if not at the theater? Probably at home watching something far less expensive on Netflix or possibly rewatching Tivo'ed Golden Globes and Ricky Gervais giving Hollywood a much needed comedic reality check. Either way, this holiday weekend's diminished attendance is just another sign that the box office is in for a rough 2011.
