Seriously, what genre is better suited to the anthology format than horror? You get a bunch of bite-sized scary stories, don't have to keep around characters too long before you're allowed to kill them off, and get to include every kind of mythical monster you like without it seeming over the top. The last American movie to really give it a shot was the sadly underseen Trick 'r Treat but the mini-genre lives on, and now is coming back with a parody element as well.

In the works from Instinctive Film and Reverence is the omnibus film Paris, I'll Kill You, a play on the 2006 film Paris, Je'taime, in which directors like Alexander Payne and the Coen Brothers directed short vignettes set in the City of Lights. This time you may as well rename it the city of darkness; every story in the film will be set in "the seedy underbelly of the city of love," and will come from an international team of all-star horror directors like Joe Dante, Vincenzo Natali, Xavier Gens, Paco Plaza and more.

Even better for horror fans, the producers are imagining an entire franchise of films, possibly moving on to new horrors in New York or Shanghai or another global city. The spin-off method didn't work so well for Paris, Je'taime-- follow-up New York I Love You was pretty weak-- but given the endless inventiveness of the horror genre, I feel like this one could hold up a little better. At bare minimum, it's something more to look forward to than yet another Saw movie.
