As awesome as Kevin Smith occasionally is, he’s not exactly known for working with big name stars, unless of course they’re his friends. So Ben Affleck doesn’t count. Ok, I guess Chris Rock counts, but he’s the exception more than the rule. Smith’s low budget indies rarely have the kind of cash necessary to afford big names, and when they do the best they can usually manage is one. Like Rosario Dawson in Clerks II. That’s not a criticism mind you, I think his movies are better for it, but it makes it somewhat surprising that, as announced last week, he’s landed Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks for Zack and Miri Make a Porno.
So if you’re like me (and for your sake I hope you aren’t), you’ve been spending the last week feverishly checking and re-checking his MySpace page in anticipation of his inevitable blogged explanation of how he managed to make his movie so awesome. When a post didn’t immediately appear, I slacked off on checking, until tonight when I popped online and found a detailed post from Smith explaining how the whole thing went down, posted on Monday.
So just how did Kevin Smith manage to get the greatest cast ever for his next movie? Say thanks to The 40 Year-Old Virgin and Harvey Weinstein. Kevin watched Virgin on DVD and fell in love with Rogen after watching him threaten to rip the head off Paul Rudd’s videogame character. Kevin started writing his script, and found himself writing the character of Zack for Rogen. He finished, emailed Rogen in the midst of Knocked Up fully expecting never to get a response from a guy who was way to big to be in his movie, and got a response back one hour after sending it. It said, “This may sound like bullshit, but when I first moved to LA, I went out to meet with agencies, and one of them asked me what my goals were. I said "to be in a kevin smith movie." That goal has not changed.” The rest it seems, is history. Two of the coolest dudes in Hollywood unite.
