The adaptation of David Mitchell’s acclaimed novel Cloud Atlas has been getting a lot of press lately. Not just because it’s an award winning novel with a lot of fan attention, but because turning it into a movie will undoubtedly be one of the most ambitious endeavors undertaken by Hollywood in a long time. Covering six storylines that span a millenia will be no small task for directors Tom Tykwer and Andy and Lana Wachowski.

Though the film is already set to star Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Susan Sarandon, and Jim Broadbent, Atlas is still adding to its long list of actors helping bring this massive story to the screen. Hugh Grant, who dropped off the radar after 2009’s Did You Hear About the Morgans, has been added to the cast today, just three days before the film is set to begin production in Scotland.

We don’t know who Grant will play, but with all of the actors set to play multiple roles, and multiple genders, casting assignments are probably going to seem kind of muddled until we actually see how the creative team is going to pull this off. Everything we’re hearing about Cloud Atlas makes it seem really weird, but with the kind of talent attached and the combined unique visions of Tykwer and the Wachowskis, the weirdness will most definitely be handled properly and crafted into an interesting, beautiful story. Here's how the producers describe it:
Cloud Atlas is an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution.
We’ll be keeping our ears to the ground for news on this one as I’m sure we’ll be seeing some interesting stuff from the set very soon. Once Tom Hanks puts a wig on we can be pretty sure some pictures will surface.
