Is Hugh Jackman's Real Steel Actually Winning Over Critics?![]()
In this week's This Rotten Week column, our review predictor guru Doug Norrie explained that the Hugh Jackman robot boxing movie Real Steel has been getting surprisingly solid early reviews, and predicted an overall 55% Tomatoscore. That seems crazy enough for something that looks to be a blatant knockoff of Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, but believe it or not, the current Tomatoscore is even higher. Right now on Rotten Tomatoes, Real Steel has a 67% fresh score, right next to the likes of Our Idiot Brother or Babel in terms of critical acclaim.
A lot of people-- including, I admit, yours truly-- expected Real Steel to be an easy critical flop, an overbooked father-son saga with that added ludicrous element of boxing robots. But in fact, even our own Josh Tyler-- whose review of Real Steel will be posted on the site soon-- says the boxing robots are in fact that best thing Real Steel has going for it. Here's his two-sentence take: Any time there's not a robot on screen Real Steel is an unbearable slog. Whenever the robots show up, it's a lot of fun. You can check the site later this week for more from Josh on that. In the meantime, we want to hear from you. Are you guys believing the early critical reviews and actually considering seeing Real Steel? Did you believe the movie would be great all along? Or are you trusting your gut on the possibilities for a robot boxing movie and planning to stay away? Chime in on the poll below and let us know! We'll have much more Real Steel coverage, including interviews, before the movie opens in theaters this Friday.
Are you surprised Real Steel is getting such good reviews?
