The Hysterical Advice Jai Courtney Got For Playing Captain Boomerang In Suicide Squad

The upcoming Suicide Squad has an eclectic and interesting ensemble cast to say the least. So, how do you make each character stand out and be unique? Well, if being named Captain Boomerang isn’t enough, Jai Courtney got some interesting advice from his director on how to play his part.

A new feature in Empire Magazine (via ComicBookMovie) includes one absolutely fantastic quote from Courtney about how he was told to play his part. He said:

Dave's first instruction was, 'Find your inner shitbag.'

That is certainly one way to put it. It’s always important to find your motivation as an actor, and apparently Boomerang’s motivation is that he’s an absolutely terrible person. Dave, in this case, is the film’s director, David Ayer, who must have a very clear vision of where Captain Boomerang fits amongst the rest of his Suicide Squad teammates. While the entire team is made up of anti-heroes, they’re all criminals after all, even if they will be the heroes of this particular story, it looks like Boomerang may be the least heroic of the crew.

It should be a fun diversion for Courtney, who’s become one of Hollywood’s go-to guys for the action hero role in recent years. Now he gets to trade that in to play a different sort of part. He also refers to Boomerang as a "complete bogan," which is Australian slang for a lower class person without sophistication or refinement. This description certainly fits with the parts of Boomerang that we know. His absolutely epic beard was apparently trimmed by Ayer himself and was meant to look like his buddy got drunk and cut his hair.

While the initial Suicide Squad trailer makes the crew out to be somewhat sympathetic, we now really need to reconsider that when it comes to Boomerang. If he’s the "shitbag" of the crew he may be the least likable among the group. There has to be somebody in there we really don’t like, right? You know that there will be those who are a bit more chaotic and not as easy to control. We can also see some potential conflicts among other members of the team. The trailer includes some scenes that show Will Smith’s Deadshot playing the part of middle-class father and husband. He and the rougher around edges Boomerang may not get along as well.

Captain Boomerang also has the unfortunate distinction of having one of the least cool names in the entire Suicide Squad. The more we learn, however, the more it looks like he may be one of the more entertaining characters to watch on screen. What are your thoughts on seeing Jai Courtney's "shitbag" next summer?
