 A few days ago we brought you the story that Johnny Depp will join the cast of the long anticipated, brilliantly scripted I Am Legend alongside Will Smith. At the time I suggested that he must be playing the lead villain, since Will is playing the hero and there are no other male characters in the script. Well, now we’ve learned that almost none of that is true.
Johnny Depp is still joining the cast, but he won’t play a villain and oh yeah, now the movie’s not going to be any good. Consider my years of anticipation over this project completely wasted. They’ve brought in Akiva Goldsman to do a hatchet job on the script and destroy everything about it that made it genius. JoBlo reports that a source of theirs close to the production says Depp won’t be playing the lead badguy, because he’s been completely written out of the new draft. In fact, the enemy vampires have been changed as well, turned from intelligent, vicious, and cunning villains into what basically sounds a lot like vampire zombies. JoBlo’s source says the monsters are now “unable to speak at all, and they're much more primal and unintelligent.” Because I guess we haven’t seen enough of that before. Instead of playing a crazed vampire leader obsessed with the destruction of the world’s last remaining human, Depp will play a new guy written into the script, another survivor named Philip who’s discovered by Will’s character. So now I officially take back every good thing I’ve ever said about this project. It’s just gone from a haunting, gut-wrenching, sci-fi apocalypse story of a man struggling alone for survival against charismatic, intelligent, and impossibly cruel creatures to a zombie buddy comedy starring Will Smith and Johnny Depp. What a disaster. Goldsman has apparently ripped all the guts right out of the script and turned it into another empty, audience palatable action movie. I've been following and looking forward to the day when this film would finally get made almost since the day I started this site, and now I think I’m going to cry.
