Ice Cube entered the film industry with the homerun that was Friday. It was an unexpected flick from someone we had only known as a gangster rapper. Apparently gangsters can write and recite some damn good weed jokes. He’s had a hard time rekindling that kind of magic ever since, starring in duds like Are We There Yet? and xXx: State of the Union.
Still, Cube is trying his hand at comedy once again. According to THR, he’s set to star in the upcoming Ride Along about a cop who attempts to break up his sister’s engagement by taking her fiancé, a privileged white psychiatrist, on a ride along. That sounds just dandy for race relations, right? The movie was originally written by George Coolidge but is now being rewritten by Upright Citizens Brigade alum Jason Mantzoukas.
It’s been painful to watch Cube go from an overly scary gangster rapper to the kind of guy who stars in harmless family comedies, so while I don’t particularly like this plot, it sounds like it will give him the chance to go back to being badass. Sure, I realize that none of the rappers on the radio are really gangsters, but can’t I suspend my belief for a little bit longer?
