New Images From The Master: Joaquin Phoenix Has A Lot On His Mind
If it lives up to the cinematography, production design and all-around style that we've seen from Paul Thomas Anderson's previous movies, The Master's greatness will only be evident when you actually see it-- after all, you need to see all the moving parts to understand what he's going for. But while we wait for The Master's premiere at the Toronto and Venice Film Festivals, then its U.S. theatrical debut on September 14, we can at least pore over images from the film to get a preview of all that. No, it's not the same, but it's what we've got for now.
Thanks to the PTA fan site Cigarettes & Red Vines and their Facebook page, we've got a look at 15 new images from The Master; you check out 10 of them in the gallery below. A handful come from Entertainment Weekly's recent fall preview issue, and the rest from other sources around the web; if you've checked out the previous teaser trailers like this one yo may recognize a handful of scenes you've seen already. Probably the most interesting thing about these images is the chance to get an even closer look at Joaquin Phoenix's performance, which promises to be one of the most fascinating things The Master has to offer. It's been years since he's turned in work on screen that looked this intricate and unpredictable, and having never quite forgiven him for the whole fake rap career I'm Still Here thing, I'm dying to have the chance to appreciate him again in this film.
