There’s been a great deal of consternation over the box office report I ran yesterday here. Apparently a lot of people seem to think it’s unfair to compare Indy’s opening day, Thursday totals to well… anything. Word on the street is that Thursday is a day from gimps, so it doesn’t count. Unless of course you’re Star Wars, which had a movie open at $50 million on a Thursday.
So fine, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’s Friday totals are now in over at BoxOfficeMojo. I’m going to assume I’m allowed to report those without being thrown into the clutches of a lynch mob. Friday it was more good news for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, as Harrison Ford’s latest whip-crackin adventure managed to raise it’s box office totals. Thursday he made $25 million, Friday he raked in a snazzy $31 million. Very nice take, and one that no doubt everyone at Paramount and Lucasfilm is happy with, though it’s still not record breaking. In fact, that puts Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull way down at 15th on the all time biggest Friday lists. It’s below, you guessed it, Iron Man which is up a bit higher at number 9, a spot it earned when it opened on a Friday earlier this year and earned a whopping $35 million. The number one Friday spot is still held by Spider-Man 3 and its ridiculous $59 million. Iron Man’s take actually increased on Saturday, when it earned $37 million. Movies usually do make more on Saturday, since people are off work and have all day to hand over their money. So expect Indy’s totals to jump a bit more too, and expect it to clear $100 million easy before the end of labor day weekend. Just don’t expect it to beat Iron Man.
