Quentin Tarantino will not be kept away from France! Inglourious Basterds, his Nazi-killin' World War II movie set in the land of berets and cheese-easters, will be debuting at Cannes after all, after plenty of speculation that he'd never have it finished on time. The Variety report doesn't have an official confirmation from the Weinstein Company, but according to insiders over there, Tarantino has accepted Cannes' offer for him to debut the film there.
Tarantino is perhaps better loved in Cannes than he is even among this country's most rabid fanboys-- all of his previous films have screened at the festival, and Pulp Fiction got its start as a cultural icon when it won the Palme d'Or in 1994. It's hard to figure what they'll make of Inglourious Basterds this time around, mostly because I don't know what anyone will make of this movie. But if Brad Pitt demanding Nazi scalps is going to get traction with anyone, it'll probably be the Cannes guys.
