If you weren’t aware, the trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull hit theaters and the Internet over the weekend. Responses have been mixed, but I have to say I absolutely love it. I love how they draw on Indy’s previous adventures, something that may be important to establish the character to the new generation (it has been almost twenty years after all). I love how they don’t apologize for his age – this is a twenty year older Indiana Jones. Deal with it. He’s gruff, he’s curmudgeonly, but he’s still adventuring. In short, the trailer is awesome.
Some sites have been reporting on the state of the domestic trailer. Apparently there’s been some CG work done on the trailer, removing rifle barrels and inserting American flags. While nobody’s sure why the flags have been put in, the removal of the rifles isn’t another case of Spielberg modifying guns into radios like in E.T.. Apparently the MPAA has some rule about guns being aimed at other people in frame in a trailer, so things had to be adjusted after the fact. At least that’s what AICN has been able to find.
The international version of the Indiana Jones trailer doesn’t feature such heavy modification – after all, it’s not governed by the MPAA. At the same time, it lacks the American imagery as well, which seems kind of pointless when you think about it. If you’re interested in seeing the original, untainted version of the trailer, aim your browser at the links below and take a look. Personally, the changes are so minimal I don’t really care about them, but it’s nice to have the originals as a point of comparison.
