Marvel Studios made it official yesterday, announcing that Iron Man 2 is now a sure thing. That means it’s time to start thinking about what direction they’ll go for the sequel, and don’t think for a minute that Marvel doesn’t already have plans.
Tonight I got a message from a long time friend of the site, and one of our most spot on, regular scoopers. She’s had her ears out, and tells us she knows some of the things currently being considered for the next Iron Man movie.
Apparently the Samuel L. Jackson cameo after the credits in Iron Man wasn’t just a throwaway. Our scooper says his Nick Fury character will figure prominently into the next movie. One of the plot lines being pushed for the sequel has Jackson’s Nick Fury character enlisting the help of Tony Stark in going after a terrorist called The Mandarin.
If you know anything about Iron Man outside the movie, then you know that The Mandarin is one of his most notorious villains. The movie actually alludes to him. The terrorist group which captures Tony Stark at the beginning of the film is named “The Ten Rings”, a reference to the ten rings of power the Mandarin seeks in the comics.
We don’t know if the ten rings will still be a part of the character, but our scooper does say he’ll “have a monster at his disposal by the name of Fin Fang Foom.” That might be a nice change of pace. Give Iron Man something to fight besides his mirror image in a bigger suit. Meanwhile Fin Fang Foom also plays a role in Iron Man comic lore. In the comics, he’s an extraterrestrial dragon.
In addition to new bad guys, our source says they may be planning to involve other superheroes in the film. Maybe in the form of the cameo Iron Man is supposed to do later this summer in The Incredible Hulk. Chief among those is Thor, who may show up in more than just a cameo, possibly helping Iron Man. Thor has his own movie coming out the same summer Iron Man 2 hits, so that makes a certain kind of sense. It would be a way for Marvel to get people interested in a superhero franchise which, really isn’t as high-profile. Other possible superhero cameos include Hawkeye and Black Widow.
While our source for this is tried and true, please keep in mind that none of this is final yet. It’s still very very early in the Iron Man 2 production phase. With no script yet, anything could change, and with Iron Man 2 not being released till 2010, we’re going to have plenty of time to talk about it.

WEll i think that they're gonna have war machine and the manderian. theres no doubt that war machine is gonna be in it b/c at the end of iron man 1 " maybe next" . AS for the manderian there are a few possibility's they could introduce him and show how he gets the rings and i don't know have the ten ring gang steal weapons to build a genetic- machine of Fin Fang Foom. the whole idea of Fin Fang Foom being an alien dragon would mess up the whole science tech theme iron man has. Or they could have the hulk loose control, Go on a rampage and the general tells stark to stop him and capture him to use the " hulk" as a weapon. Remember the ending of the new hulk stark goes to the general and says i hear you have an extraodinary problem. 3 things im sure will happen is the war machine thing, the making of an avengers movie and Nick furry being in iron man 2. Tell me what u think.

ok you want to know what i think, i think it would be a great idea to add another super hero into the picture like letts say the war machine, or the incredible hulk, or maybe even captain america i mean seriously you need to get the crowd hiped up
i think you need to put in war machine for sure and then either the hulk or captain america or maybe even both but thats your pick but since the new hulk movie ended with iron man i think either the new iraon man should have the hulk in it or the new hulk should have iron man in it but ill let you decide
but i personally think having warmachine, captain america, and the julk in it would be kick butt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am going to have to agree with those who are saying that these movies are based on comic books and more realistic doesn't always make for a better movie plot, case in point would be Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. What the hell was that crap? I would have much rather saw a planet sized purple space man than a giant swirling cloud of space debris. At the end of the movie, when the Silver Surfer flew at the cloud, you can just barly make out a silhouette in the shape of Galctis' helmet, but that was it. The whole reason I even sat through that garbage was to see Galactis.
As for Iron Man 2, I would make Ultron the main villain. In the Ultimate Marvel Universe, Ultron was created by Hank Pym (Ant-Man) as an army of robots designed to be expendable super soldiers. In the Marvel Adventures Universe, Ultron is a highly-intelligent "neural network" that was created as a computer-based national defense system. I think a hybrid of these two versions would fit well into the Iron Man universe, kind of like Skynet in the Terminator movies. It would also be a great way to introduce the Vision, one of my favorite Avengers, who was created by Ultron to kill Pym.

Can't wait for Thor movie .... my favorite marvel character!
Recently stumbling on the web I found someone made Tony Stark's alarm clock as seen in the movie
check out http://sleep.fm ... well not exactly the same thing as there is no hot chick that comes with it :(
Well Marvel Loyalist made a few good points. Another hulk the villian would easily be The Leader, his head bubbled up when the blood dripped in.
The possible connection between Iron Man and the hulk would be that Iron Man was in fact recruited to hunt The Hulk ( bar seen at end of hulk) and they would fight for a bit but eventually team up, and with Nick fury if he wasn't already helping Iron Man.
Mandarin may be introduced but not focus at first, then nearing end will show them as a big terrorist thread, or the enemy after Hulk has teamed with Iron man.
Captain America and Thor will probably be separate at first.
SHIELD and Nick Fury will of course be apart of another IM moive.
Plz no fin fang foom. That would totally mess up the"realism" of the movie. Even though it is extremely unlikely, iron man could be real. fin fang foom would make the movie retarted as it would be impossible. just keep it cool.
folks, these are comincbook/cartoon characters we're talking about-most movies are cartoons characters anyway.Look at the Halloween, Saw, Die Hard, RoboCop, Lethal Weapon, Friday, James Bond, franchises, all are ment to be enjoyed as escape from the everyday life we all have.
Who cares if the bad guy is from earth or an alien, a madman/woman or medical experiment gone wrong.they are all cartoons.
SO ENJOY THEM FOR WHAT THEY ARE.
I loved the movie.
I think that although the movie would have been awesome even without him, Robert Downey Jr. made this my favorite movie ever. His acting was extraodinary. (my spelling on the other hand is not extraordinary)
I think that the official release date now has been moved to January 31, but I'm not positive.
Just a side note: I will protest Iron Man 2 if Pepper does not become Tony Stark's girlfriend.
Another side note: I CANNOT BELIEVE they changed the actor for Col. Rhodes. It's just stupid to change the actor in the second movie. I really hope that the new actor is just as good as the first.
:)
I don't know much about Iron Man, but the first movie was awsome, so this is gonna be great. One thing I just noticed was that Iron Man appeared in The Incredible Hulk(I didn't see it I just heard.)And now Thor in Iron Man 2.Avengers movie coming.
Warmachine, started as an ally to Iron Man. Mandarin's Ten Rings of Power were scavenged alien tech NOT magic. Ultimo was designed and built by Mandarin. In the Iron Man movie the leader of the terrorists was either Mandarin himself or maybe even just a minion of him wearing one of the ten rings of power(*), who knows. In the film they never actualy showed him being killed. It would only make sense for them to use Mandarin as the villain in the next Iron Man movie with the possibility of having Ultimo being his main weapon. Fin Fang Foom is an alien whose race developed the tech used to power Mandarins rings and would only make sense after the establishment of Mandarin's character perhaps in a third Iron Man movie, but I do agree that it may be too much of a stretch to use such a character. The only logical villain for a third Iron Man movie would be Warmachine after Stark and Rhodey's falling out (easily done at the end of a second movie).
Next we move on to the Incredible Hulk.
At the end of the movie it became apparent that Banner was able to finaly control the Hulk. Also it took a second veiwing and some internet research by myself to realize who Dr. Samuel Sterns AKA Mr. Blue was. In the scene in which Abomination is created, a drop of Banner's blood falls into a cut on the side of Sterns's head. Sterns is a not-so-commonly heard of villain named The Leader. The Leader was a gamma induced super genius who attempted several times to either control or destroy those of a lesser intelligence but was thwarted each time by the Hulk. It would make sense for him to be the next villain in an Incredible Hulk sequal. As for the possibilty of a third Hulk there are too many variables in play for me to make an accurate assumption as to what would come next. The only guess that I can make (and I make it reluctantly) is the possible She-Hulk story line.
Regarding Nick Fury and the Avengers.
I hear this question alot; wasn't Nick Fury white? The answer to this question is simple; Yes and no. The original Nick Fury was indeed white. But as newer generations of comics were released Marvel decided to make him black. In fact it has been confirmed that the new "Ultimate" Nick Fury was designed to actualy look like Samuel L. Jackson, so it makes perfect sense that he plays him. To those of you who think that the Hulk should die, I would like to point out that he was a founding member of the Avengers. The other founding members were Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and Wasp. Considering that most people have never heard of Ant-Man or Wasp (and those who have usualy wish they hadn't) I doubt that these characters will ever be introduced. If you go to the official Marvel movie web site you will see that the next movie in the Avengers saga due to release is Thor (2009). In the comics, soon after the Avengers are created, Captain America joins them and soon becomes their leader. It is no coincidence that Captain America's signature shield is visible in Iron Man. It can be seen on Tony Stark's workbench in the scene where Pepper walks in on him while he is removing his Iron Man suit. The Captain America movie based in WW2 is estimated to be released some time in 2011. After the release of CA, the Avengers movie will soon follow. With this in mind it is quite possible that there will be no sequals to the recent Iron Man and Hulk movies at all, but this is doubtful with Marvel seeming to take a shine to trilogies (Blade, Spider-Man, X-men). At one point Captain America, Wolverine and the Black Widow all worked together during WW2. Whether or not this will come into play is mere speculation but a definate possibility with the 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie revealing more of the infamous canucklehead's past. On an unrelated note I was excited to discover that my two personal favorite characters Gambit and Deadpool will be introduced in the Wolverine movie.
In Conclusion:
Unless you are involved in the creation of these movies, anything said on this site is merely speculatory and in many cases just wishful thinking. I don't claim to know what goes through the minds of directors and producers, but with Marvel taking more control over the movie making process, I hope that they will make a series of movies that will be remembered and celebrated for many years to come. If you have read through this entire post, I thank you for suffering through my rants, and if you haven't please go back and read through for the good of all lovers of all things Marvel.
(*)Over the years the Mandarin has established a strong psionic link with his rings, which was made many times stronger during the period in which his mind / spirit actually inhabited them. One result is that no one who wears the rings other than the Mandarin himself can command them. The Mandarin can now command the rings even when they are separated from him by vast distances, and mentally monitor events taking place around a ring that has been separated from him. - information borrowed from http://www.marveldirectory.com/individuals/m/mandarin.htm

Nope ur all WRONG the villian is war machine. In the Iron Man movie terrance howard makes a remark ("maybe next time baby") To tony's other mark 3 suit which is all gray. THough i wont doubt mandarin and fing fang foom will appear; I just would't count on it.
look i dont see the next ironman move being the hulk vs ironman because ironman would lose to the hulk badly and they dont make movie's were the main guy dies at the end so maybe hulk 3 hulk vs ironman imo i think the wolverine movie should start out hulk vs wolverine and have hulk rip him in half good stuff
In addition, turning the next Iron Man movie into "AVENGERS movie" would be a mistake imho. The Iron Man Franchise should be developed it separately and Marvel should produce the Avengers movie as a separate project/ film. I would hate to see the Iron Man franchise turn into a Marvel Superhero showcase .
The main thing that made Iron Man so good as a movie was the fact that despite he is a fictional character; it was grounded and had a “believable feel” to it. Look at the treatment Christopher Nolan gave to Batman, and how successful that rebooted franchise is. The Batman universe (as does Iron Man) has plenty of far fetched and fantastic characters that work in a 60s comic book, but would you like to see Nolan reintroduce “Bat Mite for example ?
The fact that the Batman franchise as well as the Iron Man movie did so well was because they made the story and villains more down to earth and less “fantastic”. There was a sense of believability rather than all out fantasy. In The Dark Knight’s case Nolan successfully treated the story as a crime drama more then a “superhero movie”. These movies were “story-driven” as opposed to just eye candy.
Same goes for Iron Man IMHO. Some characters would not translate well to the current vision/ feel of the Iron Man movie. Throwing The Mandarin and Fin Fang Foom into Iron Man 2 as they are depicted in the comics would bring IM2 down the ridiculous level of the Daredevil movie. I say keep the characters and story grounded with element of realism as Iron Man and the Batman franchises demonstrate. Bring the Mandarin into the story, but make him (and any other villans) more human/ realistc (terrorist with sci-fi tech based power etc) and less far fetched & magical.
Here are a few reminders of what how superheroes movies were treated (not grounded/ too far fetched) before Iron Man and the current Batman franchise.
How quickly we forget.
Daredevil
The Hulk
The Punsiher (all of them)
Batman Forever
Batman & Robin
Spiderman 3
I don't understand why everyone thinks the Mandarin is so far fetched. Tony Stark doesn't have a monopoly on technology and innovation. Having a villain that can match him in that respect would make for a decent turn of events. Also, Fing Fang Foom doesn't necessarily need to be mystical or alien. You can simply make him a genetic experiment created by the Mandarin using stolen technology from the Gamma Corps. This should also be the film where Stark starts to turn into a darker more bitter person. Considering that no matter what he does he can't stop the cycle of destruction that is fueled by technology including his own. This would make for a plausible segway into the third film where Stark goes rogue and begins to target villains and heroes that are using his iron man tech for their own ends... therefore, the Crimson Dynamo, Titanium Man, and War Machine would be fairly plausible adversaries. I mean seriously if iron man continues to make big bucks they can afford to have a character turn dark and redeem himself in later films such as 4, 5, and 6 because honestly you know they won't stop at a straight trilogy.
