Even though it's still quite literally years off, Jon Favreau's big movie take on Iron Man has a release date. Surprise surprise, it hasn't been dumped in January or early Spring like Daredevil and Elektra. That’s probably because it's being made by Marvel instead of a major studio, and Marvel just doesn't know any better.
Variety says Iron Man is shooting for a May 2, 2008 release date, though Marvel as of yet has no cast for the film or for that matter, cash. Apparently Iron Man isn't covered under the $525 million development loan Marvel got from Merrill Lynch, since they hadn't acquired the rights to the property when the loan was given. If Marvel wants to use that money to finance a movie about a guy in iron underwear, they'll have to receive special permission from Merrill Lynch, permission which they don't have yet.
That hasn’t stopped them from throwing out an arbitrary and perhaps meaningless release date. With a date that far off, odds are it'll change at least half a dozen times before the movie actually gets to theaters. If it even gets to theaters. At this stage, there's still a chance it could sink into development hell. Actually that wouldn't be a bad thing. Maybe it'd get Favreau back working on his quickly abandoned John Carter of Mars project.
Marvel hopes to get the money they need from their investors by this fall. That'll probably be easier to do once they actually have a script. Yeah, they don't have that yet either. But they've hired two separate writing teams to work on scripts. Matt Hollaway and Art Markum are working on one, while Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby are working on another. Once they pick whichever one they think is best, maybe that'll help convince people Favreau's as of yet nonexistent movie is worth funding.
